Location
The little village with 230 inhabitants is in the Centre-Val-de-Loire region in the east of the French department of Loiret, where the borders of the departments of Seine-et-Marne and Yonne meet. The nearby market towns are Egreville and Ferrières-en-Gâtinais as well as the bigger towns of Nemours and Montargis. Without being isolated, the peaceful village still has its old character courtesy of the attractively restored houses and an interesting Romanesque chapel. The town is crossed by the river Le-Betz, the valley of which is composed of grasslands and woods. Walks through the heart of the Gâtinais region reveal the local heritage such as Mez castle, one of France’s last fortified castles, numerous mills, the royal abbey of Ferrières, etc. Just 106 km from Paris and 14 km from a slip road for the A6 motorway. Several small train stations, a few kilometres away, provide 1-hour links to Paris.
Description
The main house
This rectangular, stone building spans a floor surface area of approx. 172 m² over two levels and a partially vaulted cellar. A wide stone terrace enhances the south facade, facing the courtyard. The walls feature bull’s eye windows, on both sides, openings framed with brick as well as wooden window frames and shutters. The gable roof is covered with old tiles. A vaulted cellar, spanning approx. 29 m², houses the heat pump machinery.
The guest house
This old farm building, spanning a floor surface area of approx. 76 m² over two levels, is fully restored. The walls feature exposed stone and lime rendering. All the openings, framed with brick, look out over the courtyard. The gable roof is covered with local tiles and includes skylights and a roof dormer.
The barn
This barn, spanning a floor surface area of approx. 95 m², has lime rendered stone walls. Two large windows open on to the courtyard and the garden. There is also a porch fitted with a wrought iron door. The roofing framework, with a ridge going up to a height of approx. 8 m, has been left exposed. The gable roof is covered with old tiles.
The outbuilding
The old dairy, spanning a floor surface area of approx. 115 m² over two levels, is constructed from stone. The walls are covered with lime-rendering. The gable roof features local tiles. The first level is divided into three sections comprising two workshops and an office. The attic space, with its exposed roofing framework, has not been converted.
Our opinion
The hamlet in the trees is already very quiet. This enclosed property, typical of the Gâtinais region, is a promise of privacy, courtesy of its surrounding buildings, all of architectural interest. One forms a covered passageway, providing a view of the tall trees in the garden and the wooded Betz Valley beyond. A feeling of well-being is also created by the variety of spaces, some of which could still be converted. The interior courtyard is like a bouquet, admired by the many windows, looking down on to it. The rooms have a stately air, created by their old floors and the robust roofing frameworks. The wrought iron scrolls of the stairway railings are a work of art.
