This house stands between the Indre and the Loire rivers, near to the river Sarthe, in a patchwork of farm plots, dotted with copses and bell-towers, the main landmarks in an open landscape, scattered with plain, sober, rural houses. 40 km from a TGV train station, 12 km from Normandy’s motorway. 6 km from the nearest shops and doctors. In a hamlet comprising three properties.

Description

A dirt track, off a road bordered by meadows and fields, leads to a gateway. The unenclosed grounds are delimited by informal hedges. Once through the gateway, a gravel alleyway runs alongside the west facade of the house and leads to a lean-to, the property’s sole outbuilding. Neighbouring houses, one to the west and one to the north, are discreet. The house’s east facade looks, predominantly, out over the 7,000 m², attractively landscaped garden where it is not unusual to see deer gambolling in the first rays of the dawn light.

The house

This house was redesigned in 2012 in order to provide an air elegantly combining the old with the contemporary, modernity of shapes and authenticity of materials. Outside, pride of place was given to slate, freestone, brick, cladding, lime rendering and metal-framed atrium windows. Biological and natural wood and hemp wools guarantee insulation. Floors are covered with terracotta or Burgundy stone tiles, oak or chestnut wood parquet flooring and the walls limewash paint.


Ground floor
Each room opens on to the outside, providing five possible entrances. The south-facing kitchen freely communicates with the back kitchen as well as with the living room. Features include a stable door, a freestone fireplace, large cupboards and a central island unit. The south-east facing back kitchen is laid out as a kitchen, with zinc, an atrium window and cupboards making it a bright, functional room. The L-shaped living room includes an eating area set out around a fireplace and a lounge area overlooking the garden via industrial style atrium windows. The study, on the west side, is illuminated via two floor-to-ceiling windows, flanking an outside door. A more muted atmosphere follows with parquet flooring, lime-rendered walls and half-timbering filled with hemp cob in the hall area, laid out as a dressing room, and the bedroom. A metal stairway goes from the latter to a fully glazed bathroom on the east side.
Attic
The mezzanine landing leads into a living room which comprises a relaxation area, on one side, and a games area, on the other. Features include LEDs incorporated in the ceiling, skylights and sea-rush matting. Three bedrooms, one laid out above the study with a window, another with a skylight and the last with a window and a skylight. The toilet and the bathroom are functional even though these are the only rooms which have not been redone.

Our opinion

It is difficult not to immediately react to the atmosphere reigning in this house where contemporary fixtures and fittings have obviously been harmonised with its old features. As if nothing other than design furniture could be put in front of the exposed, dressed freestone wall in the dining room. As if light simply has to flood through the old walls via industrial style atrium windows. The strict choice of noble materials has included ecological insulation materials. The aesthetics were even extended to the landscaping of the garden.
