A pleasant stone house, its large outbuilding and an exceptional view
in the Provencal Baronnies Regional Nature Park
Dieulefit, DROME rhones-alps 26220 FR

Location

This house is in the Provencal side of the French department of Drôme, amidst the outstanding countryside of the Provencal Baronnies Regional Nature Park. Nestling in the upper Roubion Valley, a sort of boundary between the Vercors mountains and the Provence region, this property extends in front of a panoramic view centred around Mount Couspeau. A scrubland region with thyme and lavender, it was deeply marked by the history of Protestantism and exudes a strong character. Between the perched medieval village of Bourdeaux and the little town of Dieulefit, all shops and amenities are but a stone’s throw away, mixing tradition, arts and crafts as well as local markets, selling fabrics, pottery and local produce.
This house is about 25 minutes from Nyons and less than an hour from Montélimar and the TGV train station with links to Paris taking less than 3 hours. Lyon and its international airport are two hours away by road.

Description

Remote but not isolated, this property extends over a little less than 2,000 m² of land on a plateau dominating the Roubion Valley. The view stretches into the distance over vast expanses and the various mountain passes surrounding it. This robust, local stone house was entirely rebuilt on the site of a small old traditional Mas house, near to an 11th century chapel. The outbuilding standing at the entrance to the property is also a stone construction.

The stone house

This stone house spans approx. 315 m² of living space. The main building comprises two levels. An independent annex building and a wide covered terrace are all on a level with the outside.

Ground floor
A solid wooden door opens into a vestibule which provides access to a vast dining room, extending into a living room under thick wooden ceiling beams, left exposed. A wood-burning stove has been installed in a corner of the living room. Wide windows open on to a gravel terrace sheltered by a creeper-covered pergola. The kitchen adjoining the dining room also communicates with the terrace. A laundry room opposite is separated by a door leading to a study, which could be independent as it also has a large, glazed French window opening on to the outside.
Following on from the main building, a suite precedes the covered terrace that houses a summer kitchen. This suite has an independent entrance. It comprises a bedroom, a private shower room and a separate toilet. The terrace is covered by a robust roofing framework supported on stone columns. It houses a fitted summer kitchen.

First floor
A stone stairway in the main building leads to the upstairs vestibule which provides access to three large bedrooms with solid wood parquet flooring. The beams under the slopes of the roof have been left exposed. A bathroom fitted with a shower and a corner bath, as well as a separate toilet provide additional comfort to this level.

The outbuilding

This outbuilding stands at the entrance to the property, not far from the main house. Constructed from stone, it has two levels each spanning approx. 45 m². A double, open garage and a workshop take up the ground floor. An indoor wooden stairway goes down to the garden level and provides access to a cellar and an exercise room which opens on to the garden. This outbuilding could also be converted into a separate dwelling if so desired.

Our opinion

Retreat, monastery or haven? This house is not, however, isolated and the small Huguenot town of Dieulefit meets all needs. The sober stone constructions appear, quite simply, to be essential features for the backdrop comprising wooded uplands and gentle grassy slopes with grazing herds and flocks. The summer kitchen and its superb dressed stone pillars says enough about its complicity with nature, courtesy of the region’s climate. This property would ideally suit a large family or a tourist activity.
