A 19th century artist’s house and its 5 ha of forest
nestling in a countrified setting to the south of the Touraine region
Tours, INDRE-ET-LOIRE center-val-de-loire 37000 FR

Location

This property, in the south of the Touraine region, is 3 hours from Paris via the A10 motorway, a slip road for which is but a few kilometres away, as well as 20 minutes from Tours and its TGV train station, with 1-hour links to Paris. In the verdant Manse Valley, this residence is just a few minutes from the town-centre of Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine with all shops and amenities. Nature, however, rules the surroundings.

Description

This property is reached via a private lane, a turning off the road which is bordered by forest and leads to a courtyard in front of the building. The latter initially takes the form of seven arcades, dating from the 12th century, topped with a gallery featuring numerous openings. A building, adjoining the rear and dating from 1866, is taller than the gallery.
This property is composed of miscellaneous materials such as dressed stone for the arcades, local freestone for the gallery as well as a red brick gable and a traditional tile roof for the main building. A combination of atypical and unique architecture where various eras successfully co-exist.

The artist’s house

This south-facing house is preceded by a vast terrace tiled with large terracotta tiles under the arcades where there are several entrances. The house spans 360 m² over three levels and an attic.

Ground floor
The ground floor comprises a large, fitted kitchen, with terracotta floor tiles, painted ceiling beams and a fireplace in good working order. The same decor can be found in the following dining room.
Also on the ground floor are a toilet, a boiler room, a large wine cellar hewn in the rock and an artist’s studio.

First floor
The first floor landing provides access to a lounge-library, with a fireplace, followed by a first bedroom, with its terrace, its dressing room, its bathroom and its toilet. The gallery is taken up by a lounge and an independent study, both facing south with views extending over the Manse Valley. This level includes a second bedroom also with a shower room and a separate toilet.
Second floor
The second floor has two more bedrooms, with painted ceiling beams, terracotta floor tiles and fabric hung on the walls, as well as a shower room and a separate toilet.
Attic
The attic space, which currently spans the full floor surface area of the building, could be converted.

The parklands and the woods

This house comes with almost five hectares of parklands, four of which are woods. This private forest, essentially planted with oak trees, notably features two very old specimens over 450 years old that majestically take pride of place over the premises.
A meadow, an orchard, flower beds and flowering shrubs make up the garden which has a rainwater recuperation system used for watering purposes.
Numerous cellars hewn in the rock complete the external areas surrounding the property. These are predominantly used as storage areas.

Our opinion

Nature is a muse or, at least, a source of and framework for inspiration. With a nearby river, oak trees in the forest and flower beds in the garden, it is little wonder that an artist took up residence here, leaving his mark in the current decor that new owners can do with as they please. He had another reason for doing this: the atypical character, with the emphasis on both words, of the house. Its originality makes it extremely attractive. The gallery supported on arcades comes from the Loire chateaux whilst the local combined use of freestone and brick dates from the Louis XIII era. Some of the oak trees in the woods are several hundreds of years old, an indication that the quality of life here is good.
