Tours, INDRE-ET-LOIRE center-val-de-loire 37000 FR
Centre

Location

In a quiet little street on the heights of Tours, with the river Loire below.
On the land of an old commune, on the banks of the Loire, that became part of the town at the beginning of the 1960’s. Near to an abbey which was one of the main French pilgrim meccas in the Middle-Ages, but is now partially in ruins.
On the banks of the river, not far from there, a vast green open space spanning several hectares, one of the biggest parks in Tours. Road access to the property is extremely practical with a slip road on to the motorway nearby and a road leading directly to the town centre. A peaceful spot, slightly out of the way, in a quiet, predominantly residential district abounding in historic heritage.

Description

An old stone wall, bordering the little street and topped with a thick, variegated hedge, extends to double metal gates. The upper section is covered with a luxuriant wisteria.
Inside the property are two adjoining and communicating stone buildings, of different sizes and from different eras. The smaller one dates from the 17th century, whilst the bigger, more impressive one is from the 19th century.
The first has a roof covered with slate and small old flat tiles, enhanced in the front section by a wide, double shed dormer.
The second has a hip, slate roof, topped with a zinc ridge, adding a touch of elegance. This roof also features an original central, slightly domed pediment roof dormer, with a skylight on either side. This 19th century facade has a certain symmetry and a wonderful harmony, enhanced by a Virginia creeper, running halfway up from one end to the other. The upper section of this facade features three windows whilst the garden level has three glazed doors. The other 17th century section has two shed dormers and two glazed doors set in the middle of the building. The Virginia creeper is followed by an undulating wisteria. A small outbuilding, further away, is used for storage purposes.
A vast, green open-space, laid to lawn and spanning more than 1,000 m², faces the house on the right-hand side, beyond a fine gravel driveway. Enhanced with a great variety of lush plants, it is bordered by hedges and adorned with two impressive trees. Next to it are gardens.

The house

This double building spans more than 200 m² of living space. The soberness of the dressed stone facade is not only enhanced with almost invisible metal shutters that fold back into the window framing but also softened by the lush vegetation growing from one side to the other.

Ground floor
A glazed door in the left-hand side of the facade provides access to a hall, with a paved floor, that leads, right, to a double reception room, with parquet flooring, a stone fireplace and moulding. Spanning more than 40 m², it has two French windows opening into the garden. The hall then leads, left, to a dining room, with paved flooring, a stone fireplace, a cupboard set in a wall and a glazed door opening on to the garden. This is followed by a fitted kitchen with floor tiles and a wooden mantel on the fireplace. Just like the living and dining rooms, the kitchen has a French window that opens on to the garden. On the side of the entrance hall, a tiled storeroom is also used as a laundry room and a boiler room. And lastly, the hall also provides access to a wooden stairway going upstairs. A toilet has been installed underneath the stairs.
First floor
The first floor landing provides access to a main bedroom, with a wardrobe, a cloakroom and a bathroom, which has its own fireplace. The landing also leads to a room in use as a study. There is parquet flooring throughout, even in the bathroom.
A corridor on the right-hand side provides access to a bedroom and a bathroom with cupboards and hanging space. There are terracotta floor tiles throughout.
And lastly, a hall area on the landing leads to a toilet with a wash-hand basin.

Second floor
The upper level, with outstanding exposed beams, comprises three rooms, including a pleasant bedroom with a sloping ceiling.

Our opinion

This character residence and its little wooded parklands, at a slight distance from the delightful capital of the Touraine region, are out of sight of onlookers, behind an old wall and munificent vegetation. A harmonious property, it is both luxurious and discreet with a touch of originality. It is without doubt a sought-after residence in the astonishing town of Tours. Of a reasonable-size, it forms an ideal, peaceful family home and has a spacious, unoverlooked garden, making life extremely pleasant. This unusual property in its wonderful setting is a promise of a particularly pleasing lifestyle in a region that is within easy reach of Paris.
