Location

This house, less than hour from Paris’ city gates, in an unspoilt village near to Milly-la-Forêt and not far from Barbizon, is easily reached. The A6 motorway, ten or so kilometres away, makes it easy to get to the French capital and to Orly international airport quickly.
The forest setting is of excellent quality and is guaranteed to continue as the town is actually part of Gâtinais Regional Nature Park. Fontainebleau and Trois-Pignons forests are close by and are ideal for activities such as horse riding, rock climbing and hiking which could also be extended to visits to Courances and Fontainebleau chateaux.

Description

Although in the midst of the village, this property is set back off the road in the peace and quiet. Its main L-shaped building comprises two levels and converted attic space. An outbuilding standing in the hollow of the “L” almost closes a paved courtyard, the last sides of which are planted with flower beds.
The immaculately kept parklands consist of lawn areas alternating with tall trees, including tall pines characteristic of the surrounding forest.

The house

This house, built of local stone, is probably the result of uniting two separate buildings, thus forming an L-shape, the hollow of which creates a courtyard overlooking the parklands.


Ground floor
The front door, reached via the courtyard, opens into a hall area providing access, on one side, to a vast lounge with a fireplace and, on the other side, into a large dining room, an open-plan kitchen and a study that could easily be transformed into a bedroom. This same hall area also leads to a boiler room, a laundry room, a toilet and numerous cupboards.
First floor
A landing room is laid out as a library with a fireplace. On one side, it provides access to the master bedroom, with a dressing room, a toilet and a bathroom. On the other, a hall area leads to three bedrooms and a shower room with a toilet.
Attic
The rooms in the converted attic space have sloping ceilings. They comprise a landing room, two bedrooms and a bathroom.
Cellar
These two old, vaulted, stone cellars can be used for laying down wine and storing foodstuffs.

The outbuilding

The outbuilding, facing the house, comprises a covered area which can take two parked cars (another two can be parked outside) and an artist’s studio on the ground floor. This could also be turned into a summer kitchen with its sink already in place. It is topped with an attic.

Our opinion

The grey stone exudes an air of Brittany. The good quality wood forming the lintels, the shutters, the exposed roofing framework and the outside stairway on the outbuilding exudes a rustic air and yet the current owners, who live here all year round, work in Paris. Proof of the balance of life that is possible here. And it would be the same if the residents only came at weekends and for holidays. The layout of the buildings gives a feeling of a little enclosed, private universe which is reinforced by the surrounding parklands with their tall characteristic pine trees. The artist’s studio could be converted into a guest house or a caretaker’s cottage.
