Description

This house stands facing the port of Pont-Aven, dominating the quays. It can be reached via two entrances: one on a lower level or via a narrow street on the heights. A garage, behind, on the west side, adjoins but does not communicate with the house. It is also possible to park in front of the garage. A terrace on the other side provides access to an east-facing garden below the house. At the end of the garden is another independent exit via a gateway. This walled property has a south-facing terrace, where a swimming pool has been installed.

The house

This original, 1946 house, once the workshop of a well-known master glassmaker, did not undergo any major modifications, apart from the adding of living space above the workshop, up until recent years when works were carried out to fully renovated the inside of all four levels (doors and windows included). The original structure of the facades has, nevertheless, remained unchanged. This house, exuding history and creation, was constructed in an Art Deco style and is a work of art in itself. The geometric role, taking pride of place on the south facade, can be seen in the simplicity and symmetry of the tall windows on the ground floor contrasting, like an allusion to cubism, with the round and rectangular windows on the first floor. Spanning three levels (more than 210 m² of living space), it is constructed from quarry stone blocks. Its facade and two other sides are rendered. The south side features exposed stone. The west-facing facade features two of the artist’s creations which have been preserved and renovated.

Ground floor
The front door on the north side opens into a large area of the sole room taking up this level. Pure, simple lines prevail here. Clarity, order and harmony, amongst other Art Deco principles, dominate in this area. The tall windows and pure, simple lines are offset by the semi-circular projection of the mezzanine. Four tall windows spanning more than 4.50 m on the east side, together with two on the north side, let copious amounts of daylight into the main room. The living room, with a fireplace and strip pattern parquet flooring, spans a surface area of approx. 62 m².
Mezzanine floor
Currently in use as a study and a room for relaxing, this level comprises a semi-circular area that dominates the living room. There is also a toilet.
First floor
A corridor provides access to three bedrooms, one of which has a small section in use as a dressing room, as well as to a bathroom and toilet.
Garden level
This other living room spans the same floor surface area as the main room. It comprises an area in use as a dining room and an open-plan kitchen. A rear corridor provides access to a toilet as well as a shower and communicates with the section of the south-facing terrace housing a swimming pool. The floors are made of polished concrete and some of the walls feature exposed stone. The picture windows on the east side open on to a 36 m² wooden terrace, with a flight of steps leading down into the garden.

Our opinion

This property is typical of what Pont-Aven can be: a mixture of times gone by and modernity. Without wishing to change the character of the house, the owners have managed to preserve the souls of the artist and the house by combining the necessary requirements of a 21st century home with the Art Deco style of the original premises. The rooms have not been altered and are still pleasantly illuminated by the Breton light which, more beautiful than ever, produces a most harmonious effect.
