Palaiseau, just 15 km to the south-west of Paris, was founded in the 6th century, where the forgotten Merovingian king, Childebert 1st, constructed a stronghold. Centuries later, the estate was divided between several lords, including the knight, Gontran-de-L'Ozerre (later mutated into Lozère). Perhaps the name of this fashionable district, home to this property, a former, 18th century hunting lodge, is owed to him. Nowadays, Lozère includes numerous large, luxurious homes such as those that once belonged to George-Sand, Alexandre-Dumas (son) and Charles-Péguy. Several schools, food shops and a market as well as a number of green open spaces are nearby. The banks of the river Yvette and Lake Lozère are but invitations to go for a stroll at weekends and on summer days. Lozère-École-Polytechnique train station on the RER line B, less than 2-minutes’ walk away, provides 30-minute links to the centre of the French capital and 10-minute links to Orly.


This neo-classical construction is typical of the 1800’s and highlights the architectural codes in fashion during the Directoire and Consulat periods. This 240 m² building is said to have been designed by architect Pierre-Alexandre-Vignon, creator of Orsay’s Temple of Glory. The west facade is set out around an impressive pediment, adorned with two columns. On the north side, an immense sea anchor was sculpted like a medallion, as if to echo the sundial on the south wall. Spanning two levels and comprising five bedrooms, this residence is especially bright courtesy of its many openings on every facade. Enhanced with stripped, bare wood shutters, they let copious amounts of through light into all the rooms of the house.
The immaculately kept garden is filled with numerous plants from fruit trees to robust maple trees with their sparkling colours. The annexe building, standing facing the main house, has long been used as a caretaker’s cottage. It is as old as the rest of the property. This dwelling spans a floor surface area of 80 m² over two levels.

The house

This house comprises a garden level, a raised ground floor and two upper floors. The lowest level is divided into a reception area, originally a kitchen and its bread oven, and a shower room. Further on are a vaulted cellar and a storage area.

Ground floor
The ground floor can be reached from the garden level via a wooden stairway. A spacious, bright lounge features herringbone pattern parquet flooring as well as period cornices and moulding. A wood-burning stove, set in the old fireplace, heats the room. On the other side of the wall, a vast terrace can be reached via double French windows. The many doors and windows provide a panoramic view over the garden. A wide dining room, opening on to the kitchen, is able to seat several guests. Another set of double doors leads out from the dining room under one of the garden arbours, ideal for eating outside.
First floor
The first floor includes five bedrooms. The main 17 m² bedroom looks out over the garden. This level also has a bathroom and a shower room. Original terracotta tiles cover the floors. The many pieces of furniture and storage areas are all of wood and often period.
Second floor
This floor was originally the attic. It is now a large open-plan area used as a children’s playroom, with a shower room. Spacious, it could be used to create two bedrooms with sloping ceilings. Its numerous exposed beams simply exude character.

Our opinion

Elegant wrought iron gates are an indication of the size of this property. In the garden lulled by the gentle music of a stone fountain, majestically curved almond and hazelnut trees adorn the old paved pathways that surround the residence. Like a Greek temple, this tall main house is almost timeless. Furthermore, the inside still has a multitude of its original features, bestowing the premises with authenticity and a provincial atmosphere. In this decor which could have inspired Renoir for his countrified scenes, there is no doubt that Sunday lunches would have quite a unique flavour.
