This property is on the outskirts of a large market town with all shops and amenities. In the north of the French department of Gard, between Barjac and Alès, at the foot of the Cévennes mountains. The Ardèche gorges are nearby.
The large, luxurious home
This 2-storey residence, surrounded by terracing, overlooking the parklands and, on the south side, the river, is currently undergoing works.
The ground floor comprises a hall which provides access to four rooms and the stairway. Most of the old floors have been preserved as have the marble fireplaces with their trumeaux and the moulded plaster cornices on certain ceilings. These well-proportioned rooms are very bright. Glazed French windows open on to an east-facing terrace.
Upstairs are six rooms, one relatively large one of which runs the full width of the house. Although the roof is in a good state of repair, it is not insulated.
The cocoon nursery
This building is where the cocoons were kept before they were emptied of their silk, used by the spinning mill.
It spans approx. 150 m² over each of its two levels. The many openings, all facing east, are arched on the ground floor and rectangular upstairs. The inside, awaiting renovation and a new vocation, can be reached from inside the main residence.
The buildings in ruins
The large spinning mill stands on a terraced level slightly lower than those supporting the main house. Facing south and overlooking the river, it has been abandoned for numerous years. The walls are essentially in a good state of repair and could possibly be restored once the roof has been reconstructed. Spanning a surface area of approx. 300 m², it is laid out longwise all on one level, flanked by two pavilions with an upstairs. The central section brings an orangery to mind with its numerous, closely-spaced arched openings, set out on both facades. An end of the roof remains against the west pavilion. A very large reservoir, bordered by stone, in the shape of a cocoon, filled in and awaiting clearance, runs all along the north side. The walls of other constructions remain nearby.
For centuries, the textile activity predominantly took place in the countryside and the small towns in the west of the Rhone Valley. The buildings that remain, like this silk spinning mill, have a very strong power of attraction. The purchasing and revamping of this property would combine a taste for industrial architecture with life in countrified surroundings and, once a few additional works have been carried out, the comfort of a large, luxurious home. The river water, essential to its past vocation, flows past at the foot of its terraced site. The long reservoir bordering the factory could be refilled to create an original swimming pool which would complete the building’s restoration.
