Location

From the 1810s onwards, painters discovered a wonderful romantic vista in Honfleur: beautiful scenery made up of two hills surrounding a medieval town. This period marked the start of open-air painting. Through this new approach, natural light emerged in art. So Honfleur became a leading hub of artists. There, Eugène Boudin influenced the impressionist movement considerably. Boudin brought together many of his friends who were artists, including Jongkind, Baudelaire and Monet. Today, this charming Norman town is a popular tourist spot because of this remarkable past in art. It is France’s fifth-most visited town: 5.2 million people visit this charming destination each year. The property lies in this outstanding environment that seems to have been taken straight out of a painting. It stands only two-hundred metres from a beach, which can be reached on foot in just three minutes. The splendid towns of Deauville and Trouville-sur-Mer are twelve kilometres away.

Description

The property covers around 871m² of land. Two half-timbered houses stand next to each other. A passageway – roughly one and a half metres wide – separates these two fine buildings. They look down over the road and enjoy a sweeping view of the sea.

The large house offers a floor area of around 145m². It is made up of three floors that lie above a basement. The house is used to rent out guestrooms. It includes four bedrooms, all of which offer a sea view. Two bedrooms have a living room with a sea-view balcony. Each bedroom has its own bathroom or shower room and all of them include a lavatory. The double living room offers a sea view and adjoins a separate kitchen, an office and another lavatory.

The small house offers a floor area of around 77m². It includes a living room with a reception area, a dining area and an open kitchen with a scullery. A bedroom stands next to an office on the first floor. The bathroom has a window. It includes a bath, a shower and a lavatory. From the living room, a staircase leads to the second bedroom, which has sloping attic walls and a sea view.
A small garden extends upwards behind the large house and offers a spectacular vista of the sea.

A car park lies at the entrance. It offers space for six cars.

The large house

The large house is a half-timbered building that offers a floor area of 144.76m². It is made up of three floors that lie above a basement, which extends beneath the whole house. The building has been used as a guesthouse. It includes a living room with a lounge and dining area. This room offers a spectacular view of the sea through two large picture windows. A wood stove in the corner warms it up. Behind the dining area, a kitchen leads out into the garden via French windows. Beyond a door, a hallway connects to an office on one side. This office looks out over the garden. It could either be used to extend the main room or be turned into a bedroom. The other side of the hallway connects to a separate lavatory and a space under the staircase that was originally a small shower room.

On the first floor, a large bedroom offers a lounge with a little balcony and a bathroom with a lavatory. Another bedroom on this floor also offers a bathroom with a bath, a shower and a lavatory. On the second floor, a first bedroom with a sloping attic ceiling includes a lounge, a balcony and a shower room with a lavatory. It lies next to another bedroom with a sloping attic ceiling and a shower room and lavatory.

All the windows are double-glazed. The house is heated by a wood stove in the living room and electric radiators in the bedrooms. Two hot-water tanks produce hot water for the whole house.

The small house

The small half-timbered house offers a floor area of 76.56m². Its garden level is made up of a living space that includes a dining area, a lounge and a kitchen with a scullery. A hallway connects to a bathroom with a window. This bathroom includes a shower, a bath and a lavatory. Just next to the bathroom is a bedroom with an attic room on the first floor. From the living room, a staircase leads up to the first floor and a bedroom with sloping attic walls and access to a terrace that could be developed. All the windows are double-glazed. Mains gas heats the water and powers the radiators.

Our opinion

Over 150 years ago, Impressionists and Romantics admired Honfleur. This splendid town has kept all its original charm that won the hearts of great artists back then. Honfleur’s old dock, sea spray and salt storehouses give it a unique appeal. The property offers the possibility of renting out a guesthouse while enjoying a separate home next to it. With its garden, its sweeping sea view and its neighbouring beach, the spot has all you need to make the most of weekends and holidays here with friends or family. There is also a wide range of cultural and sporting activities to enjoy in the local area.
