An 18th century Bastide house and its majestic plane trees
with 5,000 m² of land amidst fig trees in the countryside around Solliès
, VAR provence-cote-dazur FR

Location

The three Solliès villages (Solliès-ville, the medieval village, Solliès-Toucas on the hillside and Solliès-Pont in the farming valley) are to be found at the foot of Mount Coudon, which rises to an altitude of 702 m above sea-level. It takes 20 minutes to reach the airport, Toulon TGV train station and the sea from the property which is 5 minutes from the motorway and from the village with its amenities.

Description

A hedge-lined alleyway, at the end of a dirt track several hundreds of metres long, leads straight to the west facade of this Bastide house, in front of which 4 plane trees, several hundreds of years old, stand in a gravel courtyard where several cars can easily be parked. Another plane tree is on the east side of the house. The building is surrounded, on the north side, by land laid to lawn, adjoining a sun-soaked area with a 6x12 m swimming pool. On the south-side is a more private area with hedges and copses. The garden is dotted with old, proud-looking cypress and lime trees as well as some fruit trees.

The Bastide house

This house, constructed in the 18th century, does not have the external or internal appearance of a traditional, classical Bastide house, with its five-window facades. Here, all four facades are different. The west side has three rectangular windows on two levels, topped with bull’s eye windows illuminating the attic. The south side has a similar layout but with four windows this time. The facades on the north and west sides feature small arched windows laid out on different levels.

Ground floor
The main entrance is on the north side. It consists of the original, heavy wooden door. It is possible to go outside from the kitchen, with its fireplace, on the east side. A large picture window on the north side also enables residents to commune with nature. A small storeroom is adjoining. On the west side, a north-south through, 73 m² L-shaped lounge, with a fireplace, is also illuminated via a large picture window on the north side, in addition to its four French windows and a rectangular window. A study that could be used as a bedroom communicates with a terrace on the south side. A toilet completes this level. The 3.25 m high lounge ceiling consists of wooden planks and plaster troughs. The floors are covered with terracotta tiles.
First floor
The stairway constructed on the east side of the house goes up to a large bedroom on a half-floor, with a superb view over the hills and Mount Coudon. The first floor comprises two south-facing bedrooms, a bathroom, a toilet and a large 50 m² master bedroom, facing north-east and south, as well as its bathroom with a shower. The floors are covered with terracotta tiles or cork.
Second floor
The main stairway leads to a half-floor with a very spacious, north-west facing bedroom-library, with a view of the sun setting on the hills. Its ceiling, adorned with exposed beams is insulated in the old-fashioned manner with old local floor tiles. The top floor comprises a bedroom, a shower room and an immense 87 m² attic-dormitory. The floors are covered with old local tiles.
Outbuilding
A building on the east side of the house comprises one room. It has an adjoining boiler room and a large canopy able to shelter cars. Near to the swimming pool is its machine room.

Our opinion

This house, with its tall windows, does not have its back turned to the beneficial sun but shade is provided by the lush plane trees. The sun setting on Mount Coudon is but one of the sights included in the view offered by the site. The feeling of space is to be felt inside as well as outside. The Bastide’s spacious rooms are full of old decorative features such as moulded wooden doors and the impressive roofing framework. They can be blended into the necessary renovation works like a mark of authenticity.
