Location

In the Auxois Mountains, 3 hours’ drive from Paris and Geneva, 45 minutes from Montbard (TGV train station), the village, perched high on its hill, dominates a shallow valley. A medieval castle, with tall towers, is one of the oldest fortresses in the French department of Côte d'Or. A variety of architectural heritage is to be found along the streets, one of which includes this house. One of Burgundy’s best “Foie Gras” (duck liver pâté) is produced not far away. There is a restaurant in the village but the nearest shops and amenities are about 20 minutes away.

Description

This old sheepfold is the sole building on a property, completely surrounded by the dry stone walls, typical of Burgundy, just like those that enclose the plots of vines. The large metal entrance gates are set in a high stone wall. A pathway, dotted with small pebbles and lined on either side by dry stone walls or holed stones, leads to the front door of this 3-storey house. The enclosed garden includes a terrace area, paved with concrete and sheltered by a wooden trellis covered with climbing plants. The view down into the Auxois valley is magnificent. The narrow country lane nearby is the starting point for exploring the surrounding countryside. The property has been fully renovated over recent years.

An old sheepfold

The main facade of this 3-storey house faces out of the village with a view looking down into the Auxois Valley. Completely constructed from exposed quarry stone blocks and topped with a roof covered in flat Burgundy tiles, its facade features a large terrace with wooden baluster railings; an ideal spot from which to admire the view.


Ground floor
The ground floor features two sets of large glazed doors, one in the main entrance hall, formed by a long hall area with a cloakroom and a toilet at the end, and the second in a bedroom. A modern stairway goes upstairs. The bedroom is separated from its bathroom, with a toilet, by sliding doors. It is carpeted whilst the bathroom has contemporary floor tiles.
First floor
The upstairs is designed like an open-plan flat with a kitchen open into a dining room, a lounge opening via wide picture windows on to the terrace which acts as an extension of the living area. Both the dining room and the lounge have parquet flooring, the kitchen has contemporary floor tiles.
Second floor
This level comprises a second bedroom, resembling that on the ground floor. Its spacious shower room, with a toilet, is concealed behind sliding doors.

Our opinion

Views in Burgundy are very often extensive and such is the case here where it can be enjoyed from a vast wooden, first floor terrace. The external rusticity of the dry stone blends perfectly with the scenery. The inside has been tastefully converted with meticulous attention paid to the smallest of detail such that the sheepfold is but a distant memory. The Auxois area is in a beautiful, tranquil region that is invigorating both mentally and physically. The nearby medieval village and this property are no exception to the rule.
