A robust, stone house, its outbuilding and its garden
in the midst of a village near Normandy’s “Côte Fleurie”
Cabourg, CALVADOS lower-normandy 14390 FR

In a village in a dominant position looking out over the river Orne estuary and its marshlands, composed of meadows and grasslands. The sea is 4 km away and Cabourg is 12 km away. Paris can be reached via the A13 motorway in 2½ hours. All shops and amenities are 5 km away.

Large solid gates provide entrance to this property in a little residential street, bordered with houses, alternately constructed from traditional Caen stone and from half-timbering. On the right, a stone house, on the side of the street, is opposite an attractive garden which separates it from the meadow. On the left, an outbuilding, spanning approx. 80 m², runs alongside the garden, isolating it from the neighbouring house.

The house

This house was once the village bakery. It belonged to a large family of millers from Caen as is shown by a motif composed of interwoven ears of corn on a stone tile outside the house. Adjoining the latter, a little extension accommodated the bakery and the back of the shop.

Ground floor
This level is divided by a through corridor, into which open glazed entrance doors from the street as well as the garden and that of the stairway. On one side, a dining room which was the bakehouse and, on the other, the lounge. The floor is covered with hexagonal terracotta tiles with inlaid decoration. Wainscoting decorates the walls in both rooms and ceiling moulding enhances the dining room. A stone fireplace and its trumeau adorn the lounge. Both rooms have a window overlooking the street and French windows opening on to the garden.
First floor
The stairway goes up to the landing, decorated with wainscoting and wall moulding. It provides access to four doors opening into the bedrooms and the bathroom. There is strip pattern parquet flooring throughout this level. On one side, two bedroom doors. Opposite, that of the shower room. On the other side, the door is that of two adjoining bedrooms. A passageway in the cupboard of one of the bedrooms goes up to the attic space.
The attic space covers the entire surface area of the house and could be converted. It is illuminated via three shed dormers, two on the garden side and one on the road side.

The outbuilding

The outbuilding runs the length of the garden, at right angles to the house. It comprises, on the one hand, a double garage and, on the other, a workshop, in which a stairway goes up to a room, with a sloping, insulated ceiling. It has parquet flooring and panelling lining the walls. A small stone extension, on the meadow side, adjoins the outbuilding and houses a storage area as well as a little room, with a door and a window.

Our opinion

This house, once home to the village baker, faces south, overlooking the marshlands of the river Orne estuary. In the distance, the vast plain of Caen reveals the presence of a large university town. Consequently, life in the tranquillity of the little village, near to the sea, has but advantages. The garden is bordered by an outbuilding which also exudes character and provides the future of the residence with flexibility in keeping with the requirements of its new owners.
