This old school stands in a village, 30 minutes from Poitiers and its TGV train station, with 70-minute links to Paris, 15 minutes from Futuroscope theme park and 20 minutes from an 18 and a 9-hole golf course. Shops and amenities are 10 minutes away. Poitiers airport has flights to Amsterdam, Brussels and London.


The most important buildings in a village after the church and the town hall, schools constructed under the 3rd French Republic have an appearance that is reminiscent of their ambitious mission. Such is the case with this elegant, discreet school, with its balanced proportions. Protected from the village by wrought iron gates, the first facade is laid out to form a T-shape and to create a courtyard with the property limits. It is necessary to go through the house in order to see the old playground, in which children’s games have been replaced by different species of plants of varying colours. The old covered area has been converted into a vast bedroom. A small wrought iron gate in this courtyard opens into a garden, landscaped using fruit, coniferous and other trees as well as shrubs. The garden adjoins the first courtyard.

The house

With ochre-coloured exposed stone walls, the longest branch of the “T” comprises two facades featuring four windows upstairs and windows alternating with French windows downstairs. A slate roof adorns the attractive but relatively plain facades. The shortest branch of the “T” faces south, enhancing the garden.

Ground floor
The entrance hall, where the stairway takes pride of place, provides but partial glimpses of the rooms. On the left-hand side are a first bedroom, with a separate toilet, a lounge area, facing east over the old playground, and an adjoining bedroom, with a west-facing window, as well as a shower room, with a wash-hand basin. A French window in the entrance hall opens out into the playground. All of this through section of the “T” has openings on the east and west sides. A hall area, behind a light-coloured wood, glazed door, comprises three large cupboards and leads to a kitchen, a dining room and a lounge.
The fitted kitchen communicates with a laundry room. Windows let light flood into the room. Opposite the kitchen, another French window provides access to an arbour where meals taken outdoors can be lengthy just like the summer days. Exposed stone walls, between the kitchen and the dining room, contribute to the creation of a welcoming atmosphere. A French window opens out into the main entrance courtyard. The dining room and the lounge are separated by another light-coloured wood, glazed door. The lounge, made impressive by its size and its high ceiling, is adorned with a fireplace and a wide picture window, opening on to a terrace and the southern section of the garden. A door, concealed behind a second stairway, opens into a suite comprising a bedroom, with a vanity unit fitted with a large wash-hand basin, a dressing room, a shower room and a toilet. There are stone flagstones throughout, except for the bedroom where parquet flooring has been laid.

First floor
The wooden stairway in the lounge goes up to two different sized bedrooms, one of which has a sloping ceiling, as well as to a toilet with a wash-hand basin.
The first floor in the other section of the house is reached via the stairway, also made of wood, in the entrance hall. The door on the left-hand side of the landing opens into an attic. On the right-hand side, a corridor provides access to a fifth bedroom, with a lounge area as well as a shower room, with a toilet. The windows face east. The corridor continues to a linen room, on the left-hand side, and a sixth bedroom, with a shower room and toilet, at the end. The floors on this level are covered with wooden flooring, apart from those in the bathrooms and toilets.

Second floor
At the top of the wooden stairway, a seventh bedroom, with a shower room and toilet, has been converted in the attic. It has through light. Parquet flooring covers the floor apart from that in the shower room which has cement tiles.

The bedroom under the covered area

A bedroom has been created in the old covered area. It opens on to the old playground and is concealed from the main residence by shrubs. Like the other bedrooms, it has its own shower room, with a wash-hand basin and toilet. Cement tiles cover the floor.

The garden

Various little sections have been created to preserve the privacy of guests wishing to take advantage of the peace and quiet reigning in the garden. Enthusiasts of fresh fruit and home-made jams will be delighted with the cherry, sweet cherry, apple, pear, peach and walnut trees. There is also a water well.

Our opinion

A surprisingly pleasant place to live, this former village school bears greater resemblance to a middle-class home courtesy of its exposed stone facade, its cornice with corbelling and the moulding that runs the length of one of the facades between the ground and first floors. Remaining from a time when children’s cries were to be heard in the courtyard are large windows, letting in copious amounts of light. The classrooms inside have been immaculately converted into bedrooms for a bed & breakfast activity. The only risk for a large family wishing to settle in these premises would be a bitter quarrel over the bedroom under the covered area.
