A 240 m², open-plan house
in a historic district 2 km from Paris
Bagneux, HAUTS-DE-SEINE paris 92220 FR

Location

The town of Bagneux, just 2 km away from Paris, has a wealth of history. This is proved by the various buildings dotted throughout the town including the 12th century, listed Saint-Hermeland church, the Maison-de-Richelieu and the chateau known as Maison-des-Marronniers which was the property of Count-Jacques-Claude-Beugnot, an exceptionally aged politician, between the French Revolution and the Restauration period.
Paris can be reached via bus routes 188, 128 and 187, via the RER train line B and via the underground lines 4 and 13. The current creation of two new underground lines will put Bagneux even nearer to the French capital. The district has numerous food shops.

Description

This house is in Bagneux town centre, near Place-Dampierre, its main square. The district, with its wealth of green open spaces and its old buildings, still has its historic character. The tranquillity and conviviality reigning there produce a village atmosphere.
This 240 m², open-plan house harmoniously combines the old, such as ceiling beams and a courtyard with Napoleon paving, with the contemporary, featuring wide atria.
The ground floor comprises a vast, 100 m² reception room, with an open-plan kitchen, a bedroom and a study. The upstairs includes 3 spacious bedrooms, steeped in light, a bathroom, a dressing room and a study. This residence also has an exposed stone wine cellar in the basement.

The house

A paved courtyard surrounded by olive trees, bamboo and miscellaneous shrubs bestow this house with a provincial air.

Ground floor
The ground floor comprises a vast living room, with an open-plan kitchen. It features wide strip pattern, oak wood parquet flooring.
Wooden beams in a very high ceiling give real character to this room, illuminated via large picture windows looking out over the garden. A central wooden fireplace will add to its conviviality during winter evenings. A corridor, lined with large cupboards, links the lounge to a study area and a laundry room.

First floor
Two wooden stairways go up to the 20 m² master bedroom. The ceiling is impressively high and the windows at the ends guide the light, creating depth. A dressing room adjoins the room. It would be possible to create a bathroom by doing away with one of the stairways. Oak wood parquet flooring covers the floor.
An open-plan study looks down on to the living room; just a glance out into the garden is enough to provide inspiration.
A second bedroom forms a bright, comfortable space. A wide corridor provides access to a third bedroom, possibly for a child, and a bathroom. The latter, featuring a decor where wooden beams take pride of place, is fitted with an Italian-style shower, a large corner bath as well as two wash-hand basins.

Basement
The exposed stone cellar, worthy of that of a vine-grower, is vaulted. The packed mud and gravel floor makes it an excellent place to lay down wine. It has been tastefully set out in order to make the pleasure of tasting complete.

Our opinion

It is extremely rare to find a house that evokes so many different ambiances and that appears to have adopted such a multitude of styles. It is reminiscent of a workshop courtesy of its large atria, letting in copious amounts of light. But it also resembles a contemporary construction with its open-plan layout and its stairways. The enormous exposed beams give it a rural aspect on the outskirts of Paris. Its cellar is worthy of that of a vine-grower’s home. Like a traditional Chartreuse house, it exudes peace and quiet by resolutely turning its back on the street. The result is captivating.
