A former, 19th century, fully restored coaching inn
in Louveciennes on the edge of Marly Park

Louveciennes, YVELINES ile-de-france 78430 FR
Île-de-France

Location

The town of Louveciennes in the French department of Yvelines, 10 km from Paris between Versailles and Saint-Germain-en-Laye, is renowned for the green open spaces linked to its past and, generally speaking, for its numerous parks and woods.
Originally a small village of farmers growing fruit trees and vines, Louveciennes boomed in the 17th century following the construction of the “Machine de Marly”, a hydraulic system intended to take water from the Seine for watering the gardens of Marly castle and Versailles Park.
This property is then set in this historic and cultural context.
It has an excellent local road network with a slip road on to the A13 motorway just 2 km away, making it possible to reach Paris in less than 20 minutes. The train station, also 2 km away, has links to La-Défense and the French capital taking less than 30 minutes.

Description

This former coaching inn, very near to Marly Park’s “Grille Royale” (royal gates), dates from 1820. It accommodated travellers whilst fresh horses were harnessed.
This south-facing house, standing in 3 hectares of parklands that once constituted the “Grille Royale” estate, dominates its 1,100 m² of landscaped gardens. Fully restored using first-class materials, it currently spans 270 m² of living space. The ground floor is given over to reception areas. It comprises an entrance hall, a cloakroom, a kitchen where it is possible to take meals, a dining room, a large lounge, spanning almost 65 m², with a fireplace as well as a built-in bookshelf unit, and opening on to the terrace and the garden, as well as a small reading room. The cosier first floor comprises 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, a toilet and a dressing room.
Outside, a second small building constitutes a flat, spanning approx. 37 m². It comprises a large living room with an open-plan kitchen, a bedroom and a bathroom. It is adjoined by a large, lock-up garage.

The coaching inn

This property can be reached via either of the two entrances to the Park, initially known as the “Grille Royale” estate. Once through the gates, the driveway leads to the main courtyard or terrace, paved in the same way as Versailles, where the entrance to the house is to be found. This stone and brick residence has undergone major renovation works carried out in keeping with the original building: facade enhanced with brick motifs, slate roof with numerous shed dormers.

Ground floor
Double doors provide access to the ground floor, almost entirely given over to reception rooms, exuding a particularly warm and welcoming atmosphere. A fully fitted kitchen on the left-hand side is the ideal place to take informal meals. A corridor, on the right-hand side, features terracotta floor tiles encased in oak wood frames. It provides access to a cloakroom, a laundry room, a dining room and a large lounge, spanning a floor surface area of approx. 65 m². The upper section of the latter, set out around the large fireplace and near to the built-in bookshelf unit, opens on to a large, paved, south-facing terrace. The other section faces the flower-filled garden. The small, adjoining lounge provides a certain privacy. It could, no doubt be transformed into a guest bedroom.
First floor
An oak wood stairway, with steel railings, goes up to the first floor. A landing and a corridor provide access to 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The master suite, out of the way at the end of the corridor, has its own bathroom and dressing room.
A foldaway ladder on the landing provides access to the attic space under the sloping roofs. A significant, additional floor surface area, it could be used as a games room and storage space.

Basement
The basement is divided into two vaulted cellars. The first houses a gas-fired boiler, whilst the second has been converted into a wine cellar.

The outbuilding

A second building, right at the end of the paved driveway, houses a small flat spanning approx. 37 m². It comprises a large living room with an open-plan kitchen, a bedroom and a bathroom.
A double, lock-up garage, with remote-controlled doors, adjoins this flat and is extended by a lean-to for two-wheeled vehicles.

The garden

The garden, laid out around the house, spans more than 1,100 m². It is planted with a huge variety of flowers and shrubs which bloom throughout the seasons. Jasmine, dogwood, roses, boxwood, hydrangeas, maple, rhododendron, peonies and magnolias flower all around the courtyard and along the alleyways, near the fountain and the wrought iron greenhouse.

Our opinion

This former coaching inn, with its facades attractively decorated with brick, its roofing framework overhanging the gables and its wooden balcony with its finely wrought wooden railings, has all the charm of local architecture. The plants set out in the garden surrounding it produce a mass of colours, whilst concealing nooks and crannies. The natural surroundings are extended by Marly Park and the grounds of the superb neighbouring properties. Interior renovation works have provided modern-day home comforts without betraying the house’s character.
