Description

This property stands in a quiet street, surrounded by historic residences and houses, near to the town centre of Fontenay-aux-Roses. Painters such as Sigrid-Hjertén and Isaac-Grünewald were attracted by its charm.
Constructed in 1890, it has a south-facing garden which spans a surface area of 245 m². A veranda shelters the main entrance which provides access to a kitchen, a lounge, a dining room and a first bedroom, communicating with a bathroom. The upstairs comprises four bedrooms, including a master suite, with an adjoining bathroom and a terrace overlooking the garden. The attic space houses an unusual hexagonal room. The basement includes an area for storing bikes that can be reached from the garden, a wine cellar, a laundry room and a vast study.
It is in pristine condition throughout.

The house

This property, reflecting the 20th century Expressionist movement, is adorned with sculptures. Its unusual architecture, with a zinc roof, gives it an unobstructed view without actually being overlooked. The garden, spacious for the Parisian region, can be seen from all the rooms.

Ground floor
The rooms on the ground floor, spanning a total surface area of 107 m², are steeped in light which floods in through large windows, all facing the property’s verdant setting.
The main entrance, sheltered by a veranda, provides access to a lounge and a dining room. These precede a Provencal-style kitchen, big enough to include an eating area.
Following on is a pleasant bedroom, with its adjoining bathroom. A sculpted trumeau enhances its stone fireplace. A French window opens on to a terrace where garden furniture is laid out.

First floor
This level, with parquet flooring throughout, has four bedrooms comprising one with a study area, a child’s bedroom, a large bedroom and a master suite. All are bright and look out over the garden. The triangular arched windows are reminiscent of the arches to be found in gothic architecture. A separate flight of steps provides access to the master suite which opens on to a terrace overlooking the garden. A winding, wooden stairway goes up to the attic space which constitutes a hexagonal-shaped area that could be used as a guest bedroom or a children’s games room.
Wall sculptures in the style of Bourdelle, representing the four seasons, take pride of place on each floor.

Basement
The cellar, worthy of that of a vine-grower’s home, is spacious. Its earth and gravel floor is ideal for laying down wine.
An area for storing bikes can be reached from the garden. A large picture window lets copious amounts of light into a study.

Our opinion

This property’s garden inspired one of the works of painter Isaac-Grünewald which is currently exhibited in the Richard-Anacréon-Museum-of-Modern-Art in Granville. Even the great Matisse appreciated the atmosphere in Fontenay-aux-Roses. Settling here would quite simply be like confirming the previous choice of many painters, who came looking for and found peace and quiet in verdant surroundings near to Paris. This large, family residence, with its triangular arched openings is as original as it is elegant.
