A 318 m², contemporary house in a 2,000 m² landscaped garden
on the outskirts of Enghien-Les-Bains
Montmorency, VAL-D'OISE paris 95160 FR

The virtues of Montmorency Valley have been extolled since the 18th century by renowned writers such as Grimm, Jean-Jacques-Rousseau and Amédée-Achard who wrote in “Les Environs de Paris” that it would always be the world’s most delightful valley, as well as Abel-Hugo who dubbed it “Paris’ Garden”. In the 21st century, this valley harbours areas with an exceptional ecological character, making it important preserved, natural heritage. Set on the outskirts of this verdant valley, this house is but 4 minutes by car from Montmorency town centre and 10 minutes from Enghien-les-Bains. Both state and private schools are to be found just a few minutes away by car. Main roads and railway lines provide fast links to Paris and Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle airport.

The perfection of the layout of the house’s immediate surroundings is impressive. A paved courtyard extends from the street to the bottom of a flight of steps going up to a small porch. This house is like a gem set in a garden where all the plants are perfectly in position, forming amazingly beautiful surroundings, a delightful verdant haven composed of numerous species of perfectly acclimatised trees, shrubs and bushes, with even a little waterfall, the water of which feeds a fishpond. A 5,000 m³ tank constitutes the water reserve for an automatic watering system.

The house

This house, constructed in 2004, spans two levels built over a cellar and topped with converted attic space. It cheerfully combines very modern and traditional regional features. The outside comprises a multi-sloped roof, with protruding sections, all covered with slate; a small porch under a canopy, a place where, as a result of the ocean climate, umbrellas can be shaken prior to entering the house. Arched openings also prevent any risk of monotony produced by the dominance of straight lines. The exterior white rendering contrasts pleasantly with the grey of the roof, with its blue and pink hues.

Ground floor
The tone is set as of the vast, bright entrance hall with its floor tiles, discreetly inlaid with wood, and the refined lines of the stairway. A few steps provide access to a lounge, with a fireplace and parquet flooring. A bow window looks out over the garden. A first bedroom, with a shower room, is also to be found on this level. A fully fitted kitchen is big enough to take an eating area and a dining room, overlooking the verdant view, opens on to a terrace.
First floor
The landing, illuminated by windows, provides access to three bedrooms, the biggest of which opens on to a balcony with an unobstructed view. Once again, all the materials used are of first-class quality. Everything has been well-thought out down to the last detail from the parquet flooring made of a sought-after wood, the sober lines and the refined colour of a wardrobe through to a vast bath and shower room. Each of the two other bedrooms also features a balcony and has a shower room.
Second floor
Great care and attention have also been paid to a vast study which features parquet flooring made from a wood comparable to teak, superb exposed beams and a small storeroom. The roofing framework is the work of skilled craftsmen who managed to integrate a tradition, almost a thousand years old, into this contemporary home.
A laundry room, a storeroom and a garage able to take two cars are laid out on this level, as well as a billiards’ room providing access to another sheltered terrace.

Our opinion

A house is above all a place. Nowhere else could this saying be better proved. Not that a house should take second place to its surroundings, but that they should enhance it and the atmosphere exuded should go as far as to determine a certain art of living. The architecture of the house remains sober. It was genuinely designed to achieve its purpose, that of a house filled with modern-day home comforts. A contemporary architecture featuring a charm reminiscent of Provence, not only because of its delightful vegetation but also because of its French bowls pitch.
