Location

The village of Mareil-sur-Mauldre, 40 km from Paris via the A13 motorway, already existed in the Gallo-Roman era. It stands on the banks of the Mauldre, a river which crosses the Versailles plain and the Mantois region in the French department of Yvelines. A 12th century church, a listed stone bridge constructed in 1778 and vestiges of a castle are all part of the village’s architectural heritage. Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche golf course and several horse riding centres are but a few kilometres away. Near to this house are shops and a Saturday morning market as well as infant and junior schools. The Mareil-sur-Mauldre SNCF train station provides 30-minute links to Paris-Montparnasse.

Description

This house, standing in the old village, is concealed at the end of a narrow street bordered by old stone walls and a turret. It was constructed in the late 20th century over two levels. Vast and welcoming, it is also well designed. Its gable roof, covered with dark red tiles and featuring shed dormers, gives it a rustic appearance.
The 50 m² ground floor comprises a large entrance hall that opens into a double, through living room, which faces east-west and is, therefore, extremely luminous all day long. The kitchen, opening on to this room, also has direct access to the garden via a French window. This level further includes a bedroom and its bathroom, and a guest toilet. Upstairs, a vast landing leads to four bedrooms, a shower room and a separate toilet. The 365 m² walled garden, the pergola on the terrace and the artist’s studio all contribute to this property’s appeal.

The house


Ground floor
The entrance hall houses a stairway leading upstairs. On its right-hand side is a 40 m², through living room, with wide picture windows that open on to the garden and let in copious amounts of daylight. A large fireplace is the promise of cosy evenings around the fireside. The fitted kitchen opens on to the living room as well as the garden. The ground floor also includes a bedroom, with its own adjoining bathroom, and a guest toilet.
First floor
A vast landing leads to 4 bedrooms of different sizes, a large shower room and a separate toilet. The smallest bedroom, set under the sloping roof, is laid out as a child’s bedroom. The biggest, through bedroom has a view of the garden on one side and the turret on the other. Light-coloured, oak wood parquet flooring adds a warming touch throughout.
A trapdoor provides access to the well-insulated attic space, which could be converted.

The garden
The 365 m², unoverlooked garden, completely enclosed by old stone walls, is like a vast additional room. Facing west, it is guaranteed plenty of daylight during the winter months, in addition to heat and privacy in the summer. A pergola has been set up on a terrace in order to grow all kinds of climbing plants. The garden provides access to a workshop where members of the family can express their creativity.

Our opinion

The village bell-tower dominates the dry stone walls, running the length of the narrow streets. Behind one of them, set back in its lush garden, is a family home just 30 minutes from Paris. Its west-facing terrace is but an invitation to take meals in the shade of the trees or to sit peacefully reading. This residence holds a promise of balance.
