Location

This house stands in Versailles’ Notre-Dame district, the oldest in today’s town. In 1687, King Louis XIV gave the land to Mr-Le-Jongleur, the hydraulic engineer responsible for most of the work to supply the town with drinking water, provided that he had a dressed stone fountain constructed. Marquis-de-Louvois, Surveyor General of the King’s Works, was appointed to design the plans for the house that was to be built on this land a few years later. The fountain is still there and corresponds to the commission: made of dressed stone, of pleasant proportions, topped with a small alcove housing a Virgin with Child. It bears this inscription written in old French:

Description

This house is in a residential street, just a few minutes from the entrance to the chateau’s gardens. Rue-de-la-Paroisse and its famous market are but ten minutes away, just like Versailles-Rive-Droite train station, with its links to La-Défense and Paris-Saint-Lazare (line L). The prestigious Lycée-Hoche is a 20-minute walk away.
Constructed under Louis XIV, this house is the oldest in the street, once known as “Rue-aux-bœufs”. Built of light-coloured stone, with a slate roof, it reflects the classic style’s soberness and harmony of proportions which is very much present in the royal town.
Its floor surface area spans 367 m² over three levels. A spacious entrance hall provides access to a through lounge, with magnificent parquet flooring, adjoining a dining room. The view looks out over a 560 m², south-facing garden. The kitchen, with old terracotta floor tiles, has a door leading out to the garden via a porch way. A guest toilet is in the hall. A quarter-turning stairway, with wrought iron railings, goes up to a half-floor with a small lounge featuring a bow-window, giving it the appearance of a rotunda. On the first floor is a master suite, with an adjoining study and a bathroom with a toilet. There is also another bedroom, a dressing room and a bathroom with a toilet. The top, attic floor has been converted into three bedrooms with a bathroom and a toilet. A 67 m² basement houses a laundry room, a wine cellar and a boiler room. It can be reached from the garden, at the end of which stands a 38 m² outbuilding. This heavily glazed building, facing the garden, comprises a spa bath, with a shower and a toilet.

The house

This house, constructed under Louis XIV, with its light-coloured stone walls and bluish-grey shutters, reflects the style of building wanted by the monarch and the town’s colours. It spans three levels under an attic floor. Its slate roof has a hipped section on one side and a terrace on the other. This property is enhanced by its 560 m², enclosed garden and an outbuilding housing a spa bath.


Ground floor
The vestibule, on the left-hand side of the entrance hall, is illuminated via a large window. An impressive archway demonstrates the house’s construction era. The floor features stone tiles with black inlaid decoration. The 50 m², through lounge, on the right-hand side, has three south-facing windows looking out on to the garden. Light-coloured, wooden parquet flooring, laid in a Versailles pattern, ceiling moulding and a majestic stone fireplace give this room its elegance. Laid out in a T-shape, it is extended by a dining room with marble floor tiles laid in a chessboard pattern. A French window provides access to the garden. Separated by a moulded door, it is followed by a kitchen with old terracotta floor tiles. Two windows and a French window, opening on to the back garden via a porch way and a flight of steps, make this room extremely bright. The kitchen, both rustic and contemporary, is a pleasant combination of styles. There is also a guest toilet on the ground floor.
Half-story
The quarter-turning, oak wood stairway, with its wrought iron railings, features a crystal or wooden ball on the newel post of each landing. A half-floor comprises a lounge which could be used as a reading room. Taking the shape of a ship’s prow, it has 3 immense windows forming a bow-window more than 4 m high. It also features a marble fireplace.
First floor
The 20 m² master bedroom has two windows overlooking the garden. Light-coloured parquet flooring and moulding are to found throughout. Adjoining is another bedroom or study, followed by a bathroom with a toilet, decorated with blue and white ceramic tiles. Another large bedroom, with two windows, is enhanced with a marble fireplace, moulding and oak wood parquet flooring. A smaller room, laid out lengthwise and illuminated via three large windows, is currently used as a dressing room. It is adjoined by a bathroom, with a toilet and a window. White ceramic floor and wall tiles provide a pleasantly sober touch.
Attic
The attic has been converted into three bedrooms, two of which have sloping ceilings without being small. Large wooden ceiling beams bestow them with great charm. The third, curved bedroom adjoins a bathroom as well as a cupboard that could be used as a dressing room.
The garden
The garden can be reached either via the house or via wide metal gates set in the majestic railings. Facing east, south and west, this triple aspect garden is bathed in sunlight all day long. An outbuilding, featuring the same architectural style as the main residence, houses a 37 m² spa bath, with a shower and a toilet. With water at a temperature of 36°, this spa bath is but an invitation to relax in the daylight provided by the picture windows overlooking the garden.
The fully enclosed, 560 m² of grounds are planted with all kinds of species of trees.

Our opinion

This house achieves the feat of being highly original whilst respecting the architectural codes according to which the town was built under Louis XIV. Two principles appear to have governed its three and a half centuries of history: the sober elegance that rises above fashion and the light which floods in through all its windows. Consequently, the spa bath installed in the outbuilding just had to look over the outside, or rather over the natural surroundings since the garden, double the surface area of the house, is planted with all kinds of species. There is, indeed, something royal concealed behind the property’s solid gates.
