A tastefully renovated, 18th century house in Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche
between Versailles and Saint-Germain-en-Laye
Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, YVELINES paris 78860 FR

Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, a small town with 5,000 inhabitants, is but a few minutes from Saint-Germain-en-Laye as well as Versailles and just a stone’s throw from the 2,000 hectares forming the Marly-le-Roi national forest. Every year the prestigious Saint-Nom golf club hosts the internationally renowned Lancôme Trophy.

This house, standing in the midst of the little historic town of Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, is only a few minutes’ walk from the market square, shops, schools and the vast Marly-le-Roi national forest. This old, south-facing house has been fully renovated and now elegantly combines old materials with modern day home comforts. It comprises a family kitchen, a dining room, a small lounge, a large lounge, with a fireplace, four bedrooms, each with its own bath or shower room and toilet, as well as a laundry room and a vaulted cellar. Outside is a heated swimming pool as well as an annex building with a covered terrace, a shower room and a toilet. This house is a 5-minute car drive from a train station with 30-minute links to La-Défense and 40-minute links to Paris-Saint-Lazare. School buses provide transport to the International School and to private schools in Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

The house

Once through the wrought iron gates, a courtyard leads to the house and the garden. This 18th century residence still has the simplicity and the elegance of buildings from that time. Facing south, it receives a great deal of sunshine all through the day.

Ground floor
The entrance hall, reached via a glazed door, provides access, right, to a large 35 m² kitchen, able to accommodate the entire family at meal times. White walls enhance the old terracotta floor tiles and the exposed stone of one of the walls. A door leads to a laundry room. A dining room, on the left-hand side of the entrance hall, features a decorative fireplace and a cupboard with old wooden doors. It opens into a large, welcoming, 46 m² lounge, with a fireplace, wide picture windows and finely wrought parquet flooring.
First floor
This house has two first floors. One is reached via the stairway in the entrance hall and comprises a landing, a little lounge or television room, a bedroom and a shower room with a toilet. The other can be accessed via a stairway housed in the lounge. It includes two very bright bedrooms, with parquet flooring. One has its own shower room and toilet whilst the other has a bathroom, also with a toilet.
Second floor
Although partially under the rafters, this level still has ceilings of a good height. It is also very bright courtesy of its many windows. It is enhanced by its exposed roofing framework. It comprises a master suite featuring a large bedroom, with a fireplace, a dressing room, a study and a bathroom, with a bath, shower and toilet.
This level, reached via a wide stone stairway, comprises a vaulted, stone wine cellar.
The garden
Totally redesigned by its current owners, this garden is an aesthetic and simple but refined extension of the house. The large lawn is bordered by decoratively trimmed boxwood and shrubs as well as fruit trees, trained along espaliers, which also provide a superb setting for the swimming pool.
The pool-house roof is covered with old, flat tiles. Adjoining the swimming pool, it comprises a covered terrace, a shower room and a toilet.

Our opinion

Where, other than here in a town near to the French capital, is it possible to experience the peace and quiet of a little enclosed universe, where everything is in its place and everything rings true?
The garden is like a foretaste of the natural surroundings contained in the nearby, immense Marly forest. It provides more than adequate privacy for the swimming pool. The tasteful interior is a blend of sought-after rusticity and middle-class home comforts. Furthermore, the layout of the rooms is such as to give all members of the family their own space. It is not often that a house immediately appears to offer a guarantee of happiness.
