A bright, 300 m² house and its pastoral, 1,400 m² garden, in the peace and quiet,
just a stone’s throw from Saint-Germain-en-Laye’s Lycée-International
Saint-Germain-en-Laye, YVELINES paris 78112 FR

With fertile, game-filled land, the village of Fourqueux has long remained agricultural. The town has greatly developed courtesy of the expansion of the railroad which enabled Parisians such as Victor-Hugo to holiday or to live there. Since the creation of the Lycée-International in 1952, it has attracted numerous expatriates and families in search of somewhere to live in natural surroundings near to the French capital. The village is now one of the districts of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, a town to which it became attached but a short while ago.

This property stands in a quiet street in the old village of Fourqueux, near to shops, less than 10 minutes by bike and 5 minutes by car from the Lycée-International and just a stone’s throw from the 2,000 ha Marly-le-Roi national forest. It is a 15-minute walk from Mareil-Marly and Saint-Germain-en-Laye-Bel-Air train stations (both on line L with 50-minute links to Saint-Lazare). A bus goes to the town-centre of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and its RER line A train station. A tramway will provide this link in 2020.

In Saint-Germain-en-Laye, just a stone’s throw from Marly-le-Roi forest, this property is in a quiet street of the old village of Fourqueux.

This peaceful, bright house spans 230 m², in addition to a 70 m² basement. It was constructed with an air reminiscent of those Belle-Époque villas in the 1970’s. Comprising two levels built over a cellar and under converted attic space, it is topped with a flat tile, hip roof. A single-level extension with a flat roof is set at right angles, forming a paved terrace overlooking an immaculately kept 1,400 m² garden.

The ground floor comprises an entrance hall, a guest toilet, a dressing room, a kitchen with an eating area, a 70 m², L-shaped reception room, overlooking a terrace all on a level with the garden, as well as a bedroom with a shower room. The upper floors include four bedrooms, a study (or an extra bedroom), a dressing room and two bathrooms. The basement is laid out as several storage rooms, a boiler-laundry room, a wine cellar and a workshop.
There is also a garage.

The house

Once through the gates, a verdant driveway leads to the house. Its plain facade, embellished with quoins and window surrounds, is the mark of a soberness that enhances the garden.

Ground floor
This entire level looks out over the garden courtesy of its wide picture and French windows. The entrance hall provides access to a kitchen, with cement floor tiles, a cloakroom and a guest toilet as well as a living room with parquet flooring. Comprising a dining area, featuring a discreetly curved fireplace and extended into an L-shape by a lounge, with a modern fireplace, the living room opens on to a terrace, all on a level with the garden. This room provides access to a bedroom with a shower room.
First floor
A wooden stairway goes up to a vast landing which is laid out as a study area but which could be transformed into a lovely extra bedroom. This landing provides access to two bedrooms and a bathroom, with a shower and toilet, as well as to a dressing room. Apart from the bathroom which is tiled, all the other rooms have parquet flooring. Each room is made extremely bright courtesy of their wide windows and their clear views of the surrounding area.
Second floor
This large area laid out under the rafters is widely illuminated by skylights and includes a bathroom with a toilet. It can be used as a games room, a large bedroom or for accommodating passing guests.
The basement is reached from the main entrance hall via a stairway. It comprises two storage rooms, a wine cellar, a DIY workshop and a laundry-boiler room.
The garden
Cherry, fig and mulberry plane trees as well as rose bushes and rows of lavender, a parterre of irises, a vegetable garden and wide lawns make this garden a haven of peace. It forms a wonderful setting for this house, its “courtyard” and “garden” sides creating a pleasant contrast, with one appearing more urban and the other more rural.

Our opinion

The garden, simply landscaped with numerous species and varieties, exudes a countrified air and acts as a pastoral bower for the house. The rooms, looking widely out over the exterior, resemble lovely observation posts from which to contemplate the variations in the natural setting. The tranquillity and the luminosity combined with a meticulously and elegantly built construction make this property a haven of peace in one of the town’s sought-after districts. It will, no doubt, appeal to a family in search of space and verdant surroundings.
