The royal or horse town of Maisons-Laffitte, with its excellent public transport system, is to the north-west of Paris. Its park, designed in 1834 and stretching over 419 hectares constitutes 60% of its territory. Access is free and traffic controlled. A caretaking service is provided. The ASP or “Association Syndical du Parc” (park union association) unites all of the owners and makes sure that the 1834 specifications and decreed regulations are followed. It is responsible for supervising maintenance and all types of enhancement works involving roads, bridle paths, squares, gardens, ornamental pools, avenues, property reserves and other park facilities, for defending the interests of the residents and for ensuring that it remains a pleasure to stroll and relax in the park.
This house, one of the tallest of the buildings in Maisons-Laffitte Park and one of the oldest, spans four levels. Each of its owners, all art and history enthusiasts, embellished it with architectural and decorative features. Historically a “country house” for Parisians, this residence has always been used for receptions. It has numerous lounges on the ground floor and a ballroom was created on the first floor. Double wrought iron doors open into an entrance gallery.
The successive owners of this residence were obviously very keen on architecture and ornamentation. The outside is heavily influenced by the Baroque style, with its pediments and emblematic putti representing the 4 seasons. An orchestra must have played one of Vivaldi’s concertos in the music room during one of the receptions for which this house appears to have been built. Great care was taken when designing the tracery on the lounge’s coffered ceiling and that of the stairway railings, worthy of the Paris Opera House. New owners will still be able to add their own personal touches to the second floor and the turrets. The view over Maisons-Laffitte Park from the terraces gives the impression that the house is in the midst of the countryside. A feeling of well-being is immediate and it can but be enhanced by the large swimming pool on the garden level.
