Angers, MAINE-ET-LOIRE pays-de-loire 49000 FR

In countryside near to villages with all local shops and amenities. Less than 20 minutes from Angers town centre and its TGV train station, with links to Paris taking less than 90 minutes (about ten daily return journeys). 10 minutes from a slip road on to the A11 motorway.

A little country lane passes in front of this property’s entrance. Its gates open on to a wide courtyard with the manor house, straight on, and an outbuilding on the left. The parklands extend predominantly in front of the manor house and along its sides. A swimming pool and its pool-house are in the south-east section of the parklands.

The manor house

This manor house dates predominantly from the 17th and 18th centuries, but it has some vestiges of the 16th century. Partially constructed from lime rendered quarry stone blocks and partially from dressed freestone, it comprises a main building extended, on the south gable, by an elegant pavilion. It spans three levels, one of which is an attic floor. The main building has a gable, slate roof, featuring a roof dormer topped with a triangular pediment, whilst the pavilion has a steep, hip roof. Both front and rear facades feature numerous openings, the framing of which, like the cornice and the quoins, as well as the “rondelis” (stone edging that rises above the roof) on the north gable, are made of freestone.

Ground floor
The entrance hall to the manor house includes a toilet and a first stairway going upstairs. It also provides access to a lounge, adjoining a dining room and a kitchen. This first stairway has slate steps and wooden balusters. Both reception rooms have terracotta floor tiles, French ceilings and freestone fireplaces. A second, freestone and slate stairway is housed in the dining room. The kitchen features a slate sink and dresser. The dining room and the kitchen open directly outside.
First floor
The first stairway landing provides access to two bedrooms, one of which is very big and communicates with a bathroom and its toilet. This bathroom also opens into another bedroom which can also be reached via the second stairway, the landing of which then leads to a study. The bedrooms have terracotta floor tiles and French ceilings. The study, however, has exposed beams in a ceiling going up to the ridge as well as a small mezzanine with a balcony featuring wooden balusters. Said mezzanine is reached via open stairs going up from the study.
Second floor
The mezzanine provides access to a bathroom, followed by a bedroom and the manor house’s attic which can also be reached via the first stairway.

The outbuilding

This outbuilding consists of a closed shed, topped with a gable roof. It houses a boiler room and its oil tank. Above is an attic. A lean-to adjoining this shed is used as a garage.

The parklands

The parklands extend over 1.3 ha. A gravel courtyard is to be found at the entrance to the property. A garden, around the manor house and the swimming pool, is laid to lawn and planted with trees, with a moat on one side. A wooded section is next to the outbuilding. Beyond the lawns is a large meadow surrounded by fencing. A pool-house stands near to the swimming pool.

Our opinion

There is nothing ostentatious about this manor house. Its true nobility is discreetly reflected in the freestone window framing and quoins, the steep slate roofs and the pavilion at one end. The building exudes an extremely powerful charm and, if other minor renovation works were to be carried out inside, they would have to be in keeping with the decor which has come down through the ages unmarked by time. The large town is near enough to make living here, in such a beautiful setting, nothing but a pleasure.
