The immediate unspoilt surroundings, typical of the Perche region, are composed of gently rolling wooded hills, rivers running through valleys, small irregular-shaped fields separated by hedges and ditches, manor houses and traditional long farmhouses, reflecting warm colours.
The manor house
This manor house was constructed in the late 16th century from lime-rendered quarry stone blocks and dressed stone. Built over vaulted cellars, reached all on a level on the north side, it comprises a ground floor, which is raised on the courtyard side but all on a level with the garden, a first floor and a second floor under the slopes of the roof, featuring roof dormers. Set at right angles on the west side, a turret, an old chapel with cellars, and a tower, all intercommunicate on the inside. Both front and rear facades are enhanced with wide openings, even the roof dormers have twin windows.
Two rectangular, brick buildings, with slate roofs, stand on either side of the gates providing entrance to the manor house and adjoin the perimeter wall. One is in use as a garage whilst the other is used for storage purposes.
The garden was designed by the very well-known English landscape gardener, Russel Page, in the 1930’s. over the years, the owners have successfully created an accomplished garden. Once through the entrance gates, visitors are entranced by the lilypond, bordered with multi-coloured lilies and irises, the mixed flower beds, the verdant sections and the fishpond with its carp as well as the roses climbing up the walls or into the apple trees; all dominated by the giant shadow of a yew tree dating from Louis XIV and tall one-hundred-year-old trees. This garden in the springtime is like an explosion of colour which can be contemplated not only from the manor house, and its south-facing terrace in particular, but also by strolling along the boxwood lined alleyways.
This residence, set in fields and steeped in light, still has almost all of the original features that constitute its elegance. It looks out over an outstanding garden with a glorious pedigree. In such a setting, new owners will have no problem putting up with the division of the premises which has been tried and tested for more than 150 years. The house is of a reasonable size and the immediate surroundings spellbinding.
