A 14th century, listed mansion house, with outbuildings
and almost 1.3 ha of parklands, in the Anjou region
, MAINE-ET-LOIRE pays-de-loire FR

This property is near to a village, with a few shops and amenities, as well as 10 minutes from two small towns, both standing by the side of a river and having all the usual shops and amenities. It is set in the midst of attractive undulating countryside with many hedges and ditches. It is about 20 km from a town and its TGV train station with links to Paris taking less than 1¼ hours. Angers, 35 km away, is 1½ hours from the French capital via TGV train. Less than 10 minutes from a slip road on to the A11 motorway, making it possible to reach Paris in 2½ hours.

A turning off the road leads to the property’s entrance gates which open, in turn, on to a driveway providing access to a courtyard-garden with, on one side, an outbuilding and, on the other, the manor house and another outbuilding. Set out around the manor house are a swimming pool area, a greenhouse, a vegetable garden, an orchard, a wood and a meadow.

The manor house

This manor house was constructed in the 14th century on the foundations of a 12th century tithe barn. Rectangular in shape, it is built of stone and spans two levels topped with a slate, gable roof with upward curving eaves. It is adjoined, on its south gable wall, by a tower topped with a slate gable roof, on its north gable wall, by a bread oven and, on its east facade, by a small single-storey, half-timbered building, topped with a single-slope, slate roof. The centre of the west facade has a polygonal stairway tower, featuring a steep roof with breaks. On either side, two gable roof dormers are adorned with a finial at the top and chimera at the bottom. All the windows feature stone mullions. A dovecote, with its dove-holes, is incorporated into the wall on this same facade. The manor house is entered via a door on one side of the stairway tower. Both this manor house and its underground shelter below the house are listed.

Ground floor
The entrance hall, in the stairway tower, opens directly into a large reception room which communicates with the kitchen, a bedroom and a toilet. The reception room has terracotta floor tiles, a French ceiling and a monumental, freestone fireplace. Every window features leaded lights and indoor shutters. The bedroom has its own shower room and toilet.
First floor
The spiral stairway in the tower goes up to a landing which provides access to two bedrooms. Both these rooms have terracotta floor tiles, outstanding vaulted ceilings and panelling (the ridge is 5.70 m high), half-timbered walls and window seats. One of the two bedrooms has a monumental stone fireplace with corbelling, adorned with grimacing masks, a mezzanine and a shower room with a toilet. The other has a bathroom with a toilet.

The outbuildings

The outbuildings comprise:
A barn, spanning a ground surface area of approx. 150 m², with a garage section, a stable section and a large attic.
A small building currently in use as a henhouse and a boiler room.
A recent greenhouse in a good state of repair.

Our opinion

This manor house bears great witness to the rural defensive architecture of the 14th century. Thus, it was very important that the restoration works which added modern day home comforts did not change it in any way. Both the outside and the inside are a good balance between its clearly obvious authenticity and its reasonable size which immediately encourages visitors to purchase it. Set in this countryside which, although nuisance-free, has good communication routes and is crossed by the peaceful rivers of the Anjou region, it could equally well be used as a highly desirable main residence, a holiday home or for a tourist activity.
