Location

This property, in a hamlet in the midst of a forest, ten or so minutes from two character towns and a village with all shops and amenities, is also twenty minutes from Saumur and forty minutes from Angers. The A85 motorway is 10 km away.

Description

This residence stands on the side of a little road that goes through the forest as well as the hamlet and which provides access to a square courtyard next to its east gable. This courtyard, set between the residence and a first outbuilding, is extended by the garden. A pedestrian gate provides access from this courtyard to a walled area behind the residence. A second outbuilding standing in one of the corners of this area, laid out as a landscaped terrace and lawn, is used for accommodation purposes. This area can also be reached from another pedestrian gate near to the residence’s west gable. The residence can be entered via the courtyard or from the little road.

The priory

This rectangular building is constructed from quarry stone blocks, covered with lime rendering. It comprises a ground and a first floor with a second floor under the slate gable roof. The facade side of the roof, the slate tiles of which have been positioned using nails, features two roof dormers, one topped with a finial. Freestone has been used for the framing around the openings, the window mullions, the quoins, the roof dormers and the “rondelis” (stone edging that rises above the roof). The door in the centre of the main facade is flanked by voussures adorned on the sides with columns featuring leafy capitals. It is topped with a protruding arched cornice and a tree of life. Sculpted chimeras end each of the “rondelis”.


Ground floor
The front door opens into a room currently in use as a kitchen-dining room which then leads to a lounge. These two rooms have terracotta floor tiles, French ceilings, window seats and freestone fireplaces. The mantel on the fireplace in the kitchen-dining room integrates a wooden cupboard with compartment doors. The one on the lounge fireplace is adorned with a modillion cornice. The kitchen-dining room provides access to an enclosed winding wooden stairway going upstairs. The lounge provides access to a shower room and a toilet. The kitchen-dining room opens directly out on to the front and rear of the residence.
First floor
The stairway goes up to a lounge and a bedroom with a water supply point. Both these rooms, separated by a half-timbered wall, have terracotta floor tiles, French ceilings, window seats and freestone fireplaces. The lounge walls are adorned with outstanding decor, painted with religious motifs (figures of Saint Peter and Saint Christopher; Crucifixion) and plants (branches bearing flowers and small red fruit). This decor, painted from a palette using dominant reds, yellows and greenish browns, dates from the late 15th century. It recently underwent exemplary restoration works. The wooden enclosure for the stairwell is in a corner of the bedroom.
Second floor
The landing leads to a first bedroom, a shower room with a separate toilet and a hall area providing access to a dressing room and a second bedroom.

The outbuilding used as accommodation

This outbuilding spans two levels and its gable roof is covered with local tiles. It has a total of 100 m² of living space. The ground floor comprises a large living room featuring a wood-burning stove, a bedroom, a toilet, a bathroom and a boiler room. Upstairs are two bedrooms, one of which has its own shower room, and a separate toilet.

The other outbuilding

The other outbuilding, spanning approx. 110 m², is divided into two areas. These comprise a room with a freestone fireplace and a barn used for storage purposes.

The garden

The garden has two separate areas. A first garden bordered on two sides by the entrance courtyard and the outbuilding and walled on the other two, including a low wall separating it from the forest. This garden, laid to lawn, is planted with shrubs, rosebushes and boxwood. A section, at the back of the residence, comprising a landscaped courtyard, with a terrace area and a lawn area, is completely walled, with a gate opening directly into the forest.

Our opinion

The priors that lived here have left a sober, elegant residence, the character of which has not been eroded over the years. It is particularly rare and touching to have 15th century frescoes in one’s home. These frescoes do not just feature the main motifs of popular piety, they also provide a glimpse of subtly coloured plant decor. Other architectural and decorative features, scrupulously respected during the restoration works, are a pleasure to the eye. A first outbuilding increases an accommodation capacity that a second outbuilding could develop still further. The surrounding forests are an invitation to take a stroll and a guarantee of tranquillity.
