Location

Set in the midst of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park within a perimeter classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
Near to a town crossed by the Vieux-Cher river and watered by six other small streams.
Fertile land where flax was once cultivated, its territory extends between a hill and a narrow plateau.
Today, it is used for growing several dozen hectares of AOP wines and numerous orchards, predominantly planted with apple, pear and peach trees.
The buildings in the village, at the foot of the hills, comprise old houses, including a 15th and 16th century inn for travellers as well as an age-old, listed church, decorated with outstanding 12th and 13th century, restored murals.
Ideally located within the perimeter of five of the region’s most well-known chateaux, this property is astonishing.
Just a few minutes from several of the region’s small towns and less than 30 minutes from Tours.

Description

The town originally dates from the Gallo-Roman era.
But its current name was first mentioned as of the start of the second half of the 12th century.
An old “châtellenie” (an officially recognised castle and its land) coming under the jurisdiction of a nearby barony, as well as a liege and loyal subject, this property actually dates from the 14th century.
As of the very beginning of the 16th century, it belonged to several owners, including an equerry, lord and treasurer of the king in Tours.
The continuous succession, confirmed since this time, consists of certain personalities who greatly marked the estate, such as an architect canon, having left his mark on the property, as well as a press magnate.
Built on the site of the still visible vestiges of a square, Gallo-Roman villa, dating from the 1st century AD, this medieval country house was extended and modified in the 15th, 16th, 17th and 20th centuries, although its battlemented perimeter wall, its latrines and its moat were preserved.
The fortified manor house takes up the north-west corner of a regular quadrangular enclosure, the curtain walls of which, completed and topped with a wall-walk and merlons, are flanked by watch-turrets with corbelling on three corners.
The fourth, on the north-west side, is taken up by the manor house.
The stone building, topped with a slate roof, comprises two buildings, set at right angles to one another and joined by a wing, featuring on the ground floor a triangular arched door providing entrance into the inner courtyard.
This door is topped with a tall roof dormer, with a triangular pediment, the apron of which, supported on three stone corbels, represents a coat-of-arms, surrounded by a laurel crown.
The north building is flanked on its north-east and north-west corners by two round towers.
One of the latter houses a spiral stairway under the old oratory.
The perimeter wall was surrounded by a moat, part of which is still in existence.
The garden, as unexpected as it is immaculately kept, would have been designed by the creator of the very famous gardens of a nearby chateau.
This parterre, with its humble decorative plants, is reminiscent of the courtly romances of the Middle-Ages.
The restoration and upkeep of architectural features, both original and more recent, are guaranteed by the current owner who has invested a great deal in this property.
He is also responsible for the embellishment and appeal of the parklands which surround and enhance the property over almost 5 hectares.

The manor house

A country lane and a pleasant, lime tree-lined driveway, between countryside and orchards, turns off the little road and leads slowly down to this unusual property.
Straight on, behind the perimeter wall, stands this entrancing silhouette.
Wide wooden gates open into an entrance courtyard and the interior gardens.
In a corner, well-concealed on the right-hand side, is a wonderful swimming pool, like a lake with a filtering system.
A gravel alleyway borders the left-hand side of a stretch of wooded lawn, adorned with decoratively trimmed boxwood.
It leads towards a section of the parklands that are on a slightly lower level.
At the end, a stream crosses the property.
Another alleyway, set at right angles and lined with trees pruned into astonishing shapes, leads to the opposite end of the property.
On the left is an outbuilding and at a distance, opposing it, the guest house.
The facade of the main building is on the right-hand side.
A recently restored, stationary wooden bridge spans the impressive moat. At the end is a wine cellar, hewn in the rock.
A heavy wooden door provides access to a stone porchway leading to the interior garden.
Inside, a few features attract the visitors’ attention such as an engraving by a 15th century poet, sculpted in old lettering in the stone of an ogee-shaped, triangular archway.
An original wooden door, on a lower level, opens into a reception room, originally the guard room, with an outstanding stone fireplace, featuring a 17th century roasting spit, looked down on by a mezzanine.
The house is laid out on either side of the entrance.
In the first wing, on the north side, on the ground floor, a large vaulted kitchen, bringing the ambiance of old-fashioned kitchens to mind. The floor tiles are laid in a chessboard pattern and the scullery has a dumbwaiter.
A laundry room, a boiler room, a toilet at the foot of a tower and a stone stairway going to the upper floors.
On the next level, a large dining room, with a stone fireplace, a lounge, a pantry with a dumbwaiter and, in one of the towers, a bedroom with steps leading to a terrace.
On the second floor, a large lounge, a bedroom and a bathroom, with a toilet. Slightly raised, the old oratory is now a bedroom, with a cross-ribbed vault.
And on the top floor, three bedrooms, including one with its own toilet, a bathroom and, in one of the towers, a bedroom under an outstanding roofing framework, with a toilet.
The second wing, on the south side, comprises the old guard or hunting room, with a tribune and a stone fireplace.
On the first floor, a bedroom, two bathrooms, each with a toilet and a vestibule with a dressing room.
On the second floor, a wide bedroom with an impressive stone fireplace, a bathroom with a toilet and a dressing room.
And on the third floor, an old linen room, a bathroom, a toilet and a small room forming an alcove.
Tall, monumental, stone fireplaces, stone walls, exposed beams and oak wood parquet flooring.
When going through the reasonably-sized reception rooms, or the kitchen or even the bedrooms, the interior of the building appears to be just right for a family.
The building and the inner courtyard are listed by the French Historic Monument Society and affiliated with the “La Demeure Historique” (The Historic Residence) and “Vieilles Maisons Françaises” (Old French Houses) associations.
Within the property, protected by the fortified perimeter wall is the refined, harmonious interior garden, laid out between decoratively trimmed boxwood and attractively flowering rose bushes.
In the centre, a fountain and opposite, the wall features another wooden door which enables visitors to explore another perfectly rectilinear, French formal garden.
Beyond that, a small wood.

A laundry room, a boiler room, a toilet and a spiral stone stairway leading upstairs.
The second wing, on the south side, comprises the old guard or hunting room, with a tribune and a stone fireplace.

On the north side, a dining room, a lounge, with a stone fireplace, a pantry with a dumbwaiter and, in the tower, a bedroom with steps leading to a terrace.
On the south side, a bedroom, two bathrooms, with two toilets and a dressing room.

Second floor
On one side, a large lounge, a bedroom, a bathroom and a toilet, a bedroom in the old oratory.
On the other, a wide bedroom, a bathroom, with a toilet, and a dressing room.

Third floor
On the third floor of the first wing, three bedrooms, a bathroom and, in the tower, a bedroom, with a toilet.
On the third floor of the second wing, a linen room, a bathroom, a toilet and a small room.

Caretaker’s accommodation
A caretaker’s cottage composed of three rooms.
Outbuilding
An outbuilding, in use as a garden shed, a workshop, a storage area, a small artificial grotto and a pool-house near to the swimming pool.

Our opinion

Who has never dreamed of spending a night, a few days or even a lifetime in such a chateau?
A stately home where it is easy to see oneself as everyone can imagine living there.
But in an exceptional place, for a journey through time and history.
This site will in any case enable an enlightened, enthusiastic buyer to bring a project to fruition or to achieve a dream, and why not start some kind of hotel and catering activity or even open the building to a visiting general public.
Whilst taking advantage of an exceptional panoramic view and rare vestiges, bearing important witness to castle architecture from the medieval period.
This building reflects several centuries of history and architecture.
It can but be true that this property is not only filled with memories but also a wonderful place to stay.
It is surely a unique chance to take advantage of travelling back through time, in a particularly quiet and pleasant setting.
A place steeped in history, an impression of no longer being bound by the constraints of time and privacy that can but encourage daydreaming.
An authentic and unusual property, complete with a reasonably-sized chateau, just 30 minutes from Tours.
