In Châlons-en-Champagne, 1¾ hours from Paris via the A4 motorway, an hour via TGV train. 3 hours from Brussels and 2 hours from Luxembourg. The coronation town of Reims is just 20 minutes away. The town of Châlons-en-Champagne grew up in the Marne Valley where the river divides into several arms. This is why three rivers flow through the town, bestowing it with a very special charm. This lively and festive town of art and history features numerous original, cultural and artistic events every year in its streets. One of its kind, an international war film festival has been held there since 2013.
The mansion house
Wood is the material that was predominantly used for construction purposes in Châlons-en-Champagne up until the First World War. Upper sections feature half-timbering which is sometimes rendered, whilst lower stone sections and party walls are built of limestone to prevent fire from spreading. Consequently, Châlons was never victim to a devastating fire like the town of Troyes in 1524.
This mansion house, partially constructed over a vaulted cellar, comprises two levels of living space and a floor currently in use as an attic. The recent roof is covered with interlocking tiles. The main facade, featuring windows on three levels, opens on to the street via two carriage doors, integrated into the main building. The roofs of the pavilions on the garden side are covered with flat tiles.
This mansion house, constructed in the 18th century, has undergone quite a few modifications in recent years. However, some interesting architectural features still await enhancement. Although this charming little labyrinth, with its half levels, awaits full restoration works, the roof is in a very good state of repair. Standing directly on the street, it has the advantage of including a garage, whilst being isolated from urban hustle and bustle by the building. The little, delightfully plain garden is flanked by outbuildings, like a small haven. Ideal for those wishing to work from home or wanting to create superb rental flats, something that is sorely lacking in the town, it would also be suitable for an artistic or exhibition activity, a restaurant, a tearoom or any kind of food shop.
