A mansion house with a garden
in one of Anger’s historic districts
Angers, MAINE-ET-LOIRE pays-de-loire 49000 FR

Location

Near to the centre, in the midst of the historic district of Angers, classed as France’s no. 1 town where it is “pleasant to live” in 2018. On the fast TGV train line, it is less than 90 minutes from Paris and less than 2 hours from Roissy- Charles-de-Gaulle airport (ten or so daily return train journeys). Nantes is 45 minutes away via the A11 motorway.

Description

The entrance gates, on a small square surrounded by extremely beautiful, old residences, open on to a first garden. Straight in front stands the impressive classical facade of a building, most of which is taken up by this mansion house. The garden then goes around the south gable and extends to the rear. It is completely enclosed by walls. An old garage is to be found in a corner of the back garden.

The mansion house

Built in the 18th century, this mansion house comprises a ground, a first and a second floor laid out in the attic space under a Mansard-style slate roof. The openings are symmetrically organised on either side of a slightly protruding central bay. The cornices, the quoins and the corner pilasters as well as the triangular pediment roof dormers are all made of freestone.

Ground floor
Twin flights of granite steps lead to a porch which provides access to the mansion house. The entrance door opens into a vast hall, housing an impressive wooden stairway, featuring two flights of steps and an intermediate landing. A toilet is installed under the stairs. The hall also communicates with the back garden. It leads, on one side, to a kitchen-dining room and, on the other side, to a lounge. Both these rooms have terracotta floor tiles and exposed ceiling beams as well as direct access out to the back garden. The ceilings are 3.5 m high throughout this level. The kitchen provides access to a boiler room and the back entrance set in the south gable wall.
First floor
A hall area, on one side of the landing, provides access to two communicating bedrooms and to a shower room with a toilet. A study, on the other side, opens into a bedroom and a bathroom with a toilet. The bedroom and bathroom also intercommunicate. This level has strip pattern parquet flooring throughout.
Second floor
The landing provides access, on one side, to a hall area leading to two bedrooms, a toilet and a shower room. Straight on is a small bedroom and, on the other side, a very large room. There is strip pattern parquet flooring throughout this level and a grey marble fireplace in each of the bedrooms.

Our opinion

The protruding entrance bay is the only whimsical feature on this very sober facade, in unison with those of the district’s other old buildings. This impressive mansion house is made more attractive by its garden, a much appreciated asset in town. Full restoration works have enhanced the spacious, bright rooms, likely to be suitable for miscellaneous projects so near to the town centre.
