Location

A nearby motorway network makes Beaune easily accessible. The A6 motorway puts the town 3⅓ hours from Paris, 2⅓ hours from Geneva, 1⅔ hours from Lyon and but 30 minutes from Dijon. Surrounded by its rampart, Beaune can boast an extremely interesting historic centre, home to this mansion house, just a stone’s throw from Notre-Dame collegiate church and scarcely any further from the Hôtel-Dieu hospital, a medieval gem much visited by tourists. Beaune is the capital of Burgundy’s wines, gastronomy and culture.

Description

This mansion house has its main facade on the road, together with a wide garage that can also be accessed from the non-pedestrian street. Built over a cellar, the house comprises three levels of living space. A first floor patio, covered with an atrium roof, makes up for the lack of a garden.

A rare townhouse

This mansion house was constructed in the 19th century, with a main, exposed stone facade featuring an alcove, in which stands a statue of the Virgin Mary. Tall, wide openings are set out on this facade; those on the ground floor are protected by wrought iron bars. The building is topped with local flat tiles and the roofs are enhanced with shed dormers. Its carcass is in a good state of repair.


Cellar
The cellars are divided into two storerooms and a laundry room. Wide local flagstones cover the floors, the walls are rendered or feature exposed stone and the hygrometry is ideal for a wine cellar and tasting room.
Ground floor
The ground floor is divided into two sections. On one side, a wide door opens into a large garage, whilst the residence’s vast entrance hall, on the other side, houses a central, winding, monumental stairway, featuring dressed stone and wrought iron railings. The two-tone floor tiles are laid in a chessboard pattern. These two sections communicate via an interior door.
First floor
The main rooms, including a lounge, a dining room, a reception room and a study (or former bedroom) are to be found on this level. Set out around the central stairway, they are enhanced with parquet flooring, old fireplaces, ceiling moulding, original, wooden interior doors, panelling, etc. A hall area leads from the study to a bathroom and a toilet. Both this study and the bathroom facilities previously formed a suite. A large dining room, open on to a recently converted and fully fitted kitchen, communicates with the patio under its atrium which, in turn, provides access to a spacious bedroom. This patio forms a convivial conservatory.
Second floor
This level of the house is given over to its three other bedrooms and their shower rooms, with toilets. This attic floor comprises a corridor, with terracotta floor tiles, that leads to the bedrooms, the doors of which all curve in an unusual manner. The window in one of the bedrooms has a view of the bell tower belonging to Notre-Dame collegiate church.

Our opinion

Just the name of Beaune is enough to bring to mind the best of Burgundy’s vintage wines, its gastronomy, its heritage and its renowned classical music festival, in short an entire art of living, for which this mansion house forms a perfect haven. The interior, combining elegance and warmth, reflects a middle-class style, in the best sense of the term. Refined use has been made of wood for parquet flooring as well as wall panelling. The upstairs atrium looks out at the rooftops and the sky. And the garage within this house, in the centre of a town well worthy of its fame, is a great asset.
