An old mansion house, awaiting renovation, with a view of the river Creuse,
in a tourist town where the borders of the Poitou, Touraine and Berry regions meet

Poitiers, VIENNE poitou-charentes 86000 FR

Where the Poitou, Touraine and Berry regions meet, in a lively, little, tourist town, 10 minutes from Angles-sur-l'Anglin and its fortress, 25 minutes from the medieval town of Chauvigny and 30 minutes from Saint-Savin Abbey, classified as a World Heritage site by Unesco, these sites constituting one of the busiest tourist circuits in the French department of Vienne.
Châtellerault (TGV train station) is 20 minutes away (1½-hour links to Paris). Slip road on to the A10 motorway.

Set in the historic district of this little town, the horseshoe-shaped entrance to this mansion house is marked by gates, flanked by two stone pillars. These open on to a driveway leading through a garden, planted with lime trees and overlooking the river Creuse. It is difficult at this point to imagine how spacious the rooms are as only a door, a French window and three windows open on to this garden on the south side. A slightly narrower garden, on the west side, runs the full length of the mansion house until it reaches a flight of steps going down to a courtyard, with its own access off the narrow, one-way street. A door on this narrow street provides access to the lower floor and a third on the street level. The east side, providing a clear view of the river Creuse and its banks, is taken up by a lounge and the bedrooms. A small outbuilding, at the end of the garden, has been turned into a studio flat.

The mansion house

This 3-storey mansion house, with its slate roof and its rendered facades, was constructed on the site of the castle. The garden level and the lower level still have 3 m high ceilings. 18th century railings adorn its windows overlooking the street, which are fitted with indoor shutters. Two large vaulted stone cellars have been preserved in their original condition.

Garden level
An entrance, with double doors, opens into a corridor, running the length of the mansion house. This corridor provides access to a living room, a kitchen, followed by three steps leading to a study, two toilets and two bedrooms, each with its own shower room and toilet.
First level
A wooden stairway goes from the corridor on the garden level to another corridor of similar length. On this level, it leads to seven bedrooms, each with its own shower room and toilet, as well as a linen room. A door opens on to the narrow street, thus, creating an entrance independent of those on the garden level and off the narrow street.
Ground floor
This level can be reached either from the inside or via the narrow street. Via the inside, it is a second stairway that leads to a lounge, a kitchen and two bedrooms, each with its own shower room and toilet. French windows in the lounge open on to the narrow, one-way street and provide access to the garden on the banks of the Creuse. The bedroom windows have the same view.

The outbuilding

A little outbuilding at the end of the garden has been converted into a studio flat.

Ground floor
This level comprises a small lounge and a shower room with a toilet. A narrow flight of steps goes up to a sleeping area on a mezzanine.

The garden

The garden is composed of two sections. The first wooded section, spanning 350 m², is terraced and dominates the Creuse and its banks. The second section, on the riverside, is reached via the narrow street. An old bridge used to stretch from this second garden to the islets and the other bank.

Our opinion

The flexibility of its areas both inside and out, with three separate entrances, means that many options such as a family home, holiday accommodation units or a bed & breakfast activity can be envisaged. This house has been developed somewhat over the years and it really needs new owners prepared to take a good look at its history so as to carry out some decorative works and give it back its splendour of yesteryear.
