Description

This mansion house stands in the midst of the town of Carpentras, partially delimited by two streets in the historic district. It has two facades facing the street.
On the east side, wide gates provide access to a courtyard which extends the south side of the building, whilst the main pedestrian entrance opens on the north side in a facade, typical of Provencal mansion houses.

The mansion house

Ground floor
A tall, robust entrance door opens into a hall, closed by a glazed door which provides access to the inner courtyard, around which this mansion house is laid out.
Adorned with a wall fountain and topped by a coat-of-arms, the walls of the courtyard, with its flagstoned floor, feature semi-circular arched, ornamental arcades.
A second glazed door opens on to the stairway.
The rooms on the ground floor, with their vaulted ceilings, form two small flats on either side of the courtyard. Furthermore, some areas are used as storage areas and storerooms.
The openings are protected by heavy wrought iron security bars.
One of the flats faces south on to the rear courtyard where a gate communicates with the street.

First floor
The best rooms in this mansion house are to be found on the first or noble floor. They feature very high ceilings, rich decor, gilding as well as double boxed doors. One of the lounges on the south side is emblematic of 18th century tradition.
Very partially modified so as to adapt to contemporary functionalities, this floor still has all of its character as well as its original layout.

Second floor
The amount of light received by this level courtesy of its height largely compensates for the fact that its ceilings are lower than those on the first floor. The rooms that are laid out around the empty space, formed above the inner courtyard, are mostly bedrooms.
Attic
The mansion house’s attic space has been converted and comprises a vast flat still on either side of the inner courtyard.
Originally composed of little rooms similar to maid’s bedrooms, an area on the north side has, however, been converted into a lounge, a vast room with exposed beams where a large fireplace takes pride of place. It brings to mind the privacy of the traditional Mas houses in the surrounding region.
A little, steep stairway goes up to a narrow terrace, forming a modest promontory that dominates the town’s rooftops and the surrounding countryside with Mount Ventoux as a backdrop.

Outbuilding
An outbuilding, adjoining and constituting a rear section of the mansion house, with which it shares the courtyard, spans three levels. It can be accessed via the mansion house or by car via the gates on the road bordering the courtyard.
Whilst the ground floor is a garage able to take several parked cars, the upper floors are used as storage areas or barns. The original function of the building was nobler as is proved by frescoes dating from the Middle-Ages on one of the interior walls.

Cellar
A wide stairway concealed behind a door in the main ground floor corridor goes down to these cellars composed of several small vaulted rooms which are easy to access.

Our opinion

There is absolutely no doubt, the Thomas-de-La-Valette mansion house is a magnificent building which fully deserves its 1972 listing. The outside of the main facade, in the street of the old town of the pontifical enclave, features an impressive stateliness. Only the slight sophistication of the entrance give an idea of the richness of the interior decor with its courtyard enhanced with blind arcades, its monumental stairway with its noble railings, its mouldings as well as its 18th century scrolls. The fact that many rooms are still in their original condition exudes invaluable potential for either the new family that will settle here or the investor, who will be inspired by the most exciting of projects.
