An 18th century mill and its landscaped garden
on the edge of the river Indre in the south of the Touraine region
Loches, INDRE-ET-LOIRE center-val-de-loire 37600 FR

This property stands in the south of the Touraine region, ten minutes from the medieval town of Loches, a little more than 30 minutes away from most of the region’s main tourist sites including Chenonceau, Amboise and Beauval. This mill is set in peaceful countryside on the outskirts of a small village.
It is reached via a bridge spanning the river Indre.

This property, bordering the river Indre, comprises a mill with full water rights, a habitable chalet and a peninsula, on which extends a verdant, wooded garden. The millrace is still there as are several weirs. Its large terrace is a place much appreciated by guests. The banks of the river Indre are free of any other construction such that wild, varied surroundings take pride of place.

The mill

This mill, with full water rights, is constructed from lime-rendered, quarry stone blocks, topped with a slate roof. Standing in the midst of the property, it spans a ground floor, with guest reception rooms, and two upper floors, with five bedrooms.

Ground floor
The entrance hall provides access to a small veranda, laid out as a breakfast room, with a view overlooking the millrace. A door opens into a fully fitted kitchen, with floor tiles and exposed ceiling beams. It precedes a living room which still has the mill mechanism under exposed, oak wood coloured ceiling beams. This room, also featuring floor tiles, is heated via a wood-burning stove. There is a toilet on this level.
First floor
A landing provides access to a first bedroom and its bathroom, with a shower and a toilet. A second, double aspect bedroom features a wisteria-covered balcony, overlooking the water. It has its own shower room and toilet. There is a small machine room on the landing. This level has parquet flooring throughout.
Second floor
The second floor, with sloping ceilings and parquet flooring throughout, comprises a third bedroom, with its bathroom, its shower and its toilet. A fourth bedroom forms a suite, with a little lounge, cupboards, a shower room and a toilet.
A little spiral stairway then goes up to a large, fifth bedroom, with a sloping ceiling, a bathroom and a toilet.

A habitable chalet

A habitable, self-contained chalet, almost adjoining the mill, comprises a living room, with a fitted kitchen area. A first bedroom has parquet flooring, a shower room and a toilet. A second bedroom features a small balcony and a shower room with a toilet.
Outside, one of the two terraces looks out over the peninsula and the mill’s two weirs.

The garden and the millrace

The vegetation surrounding the entrance to the property is immaculately kept. A bridge, crossing a weir, leads to a large terrace. The millrace is so well maintained that, with a few works such as the installation of an alternator, etc., new owners would be able to produce their own hydraulic power. And lastly, a garden, with its shed, at the end of the peninsula is planted with weeping willow, fruit (fig and hazelnut) and ornamental trees.

Our opinion

Fishing for chub, carp, pikeperch and pike in a river as clean as the Indre is to be in tune with this totally unspoilt, natural setting. The view from the garden stretches into the distance over the river, with its almost wild banks. The region’s tourist gems are less impressive given the perspective of going to sleep every night to the delightful sound of water cascading over the mill’s weirs and birds singing in the trees.
