“The episcopal town of Albi” was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in July 2010. The town includes Sainte-Cécile cathedral, Berbie Palace, home to the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum, Saint-Salvi church and its cloister, Pont-Vieux (Old Bridge) as well as the banks of the river Tarn between the Old Bridge and the railway bridge.


This extremely beautiful, stone and red brick, 16th century cloister is typical of Old Albi. Standing next to Madeleine church, it comprises three buildings set out around the cloister on two levels, the covered and closed, quadrilateral gallery of which surrounds an inner garden.

The cloister

This cloister was completely redesigned in modern times by renowned architects. The works carried out have enhanced a gallery, through the insertion of glass between the massive, red brick arches, reflecting a style typical of the region. Said gallery opens on to an inner garden. Although these premises exude great authenticity, the inside has resolutely adopted comfort and modernism.

Ground floor
Visitors have to look through a set of mirrors and light in the gallery to see a door, providing a glimpse of the interior of the townhouse. A dining room features a 15th century ceiling, with exposed beams and joists. A large, open-plan kitchen makes the room functional, charming and convivial.
First floor
A wooden stairway and a lift provide access upstairs to a large, through lounge, with a fireplace and oak wood parquet flooring as well as windows on either side of the room overlooking the garden. It is then possible to see the entire cloister and the neogothic bell-tower of the church. On one side, a long corridor leads to a lounge-library. Adjoining this room, a third lounge-study is steeped in light. A second corridor provides access to three large bedrooms, a dressing room, a laundry room and a large bathroom. A shower room completes these private areas. An unusual room at the other end was created by the previous owners for organising exhibitions. This area could appeal to professionals seeking to use it for other purposes.
An integral part of the house, this garage can be accessed via a little street behind the building. It communicates with a room which could become a summer kitchen.
The garden, laid to lawn, includes decoratively trimmed bushes and an olive tree as well as a sunny, teak wood terrace. Open to the sky and surrounded by arches, it is out of sight of onlookers.

Our opinion

This building was initially designed to house a couple and a professional activity. It could keep this function, whilst maintaining the assets that it could provide a family. The historic centre of Albi is close by, and yet this fascinating, timeless and inspiring haven of peace could appeal to a family of artists.
