This property is in the north-west of the French department of Eure-et-Loir, in the immediate proximity of the majestic national Senonches forest, a realm of oak and beech trees spanning more than 4,200 hectares. In the centre of a little town with 3,000 inhabitants, the heritage of which acts as a reminder that it was a defensive outpost for the royal Capetian kingdom against the duchy of Normandy. Schools, a cinema as well as shops and a market can all be reached on foot. Paris is about 80 minutes away via the A11 motorway or the N12. The TER train station, with links to Paris Montparnasse, is 10 km away. The region, in addition to its forests, its lakes and its rolling countryside, stands out because of its rural housing and its first-class citizens.
The large, luxurious home
This south-east facing house looks out over the garden. Numerous openings, windows and French windows let in copious amounts of daylight on all sides. This house, spanning a floor surface area of approx. 400 m² over three levels, has a simple, coherent and functional layout, made easy to move around by the presence of two stairways.
In the courtyard, a house adjoining the main residence was built over cellars at the beginning of the 19th century. It comprises sheds and a bread oven with a large room, laid out upstairs under the rafters, reached via an outside stairway. This room features an exposed oak wood roofing framework and half-timbering. Another building, opening on to the courtyard, is used for parking cars and can be directly accessed via a wooden gate opening off an adjacent street.
The parklands and the vegetable garden
The parklands, enclosed by a wall topped with railings, provide wonderful views of the other neighbouring gardens as well as of the dwelling in the 16th and 17th century chateau and the 12th century church bell-tower, both listed as French historic monuments. The parklands, spanning almost 3,000 m², are planted with outstanding trees such as sequoia, purple beech, horse chestnut, etc. The lawn is enhanced with an ornamental pool. The south-west facing vegetable garden, spanning approx. 780 m², is surrounded by high walls, one of which separates it from the parklands. It features all kinds of fruit trees, boxwood bushes and an arbour, set between its squares.
Parklands and a real vegetable garden, albeit small, in the town can but be added advantages. Especially when the house is as well designed as this one with its polygonal stairway tower, its Flemish style pediment, with the gable wall reproduced in the roof dormer, brick decoration set in the stone, etc. The inside is not overdone but is, nevertheless, enhanced with the 19th century’s art of living. The Perche region is within easy reach of Paris and remains dedicated to natural surroundings including the nearby entrancing Senonches forest which is just one of its wonderful attractions.
