Location

This property is in the town of Plessis-Robinson, in the French department of Hauts-de-Seine on the edge of the Vallée-aux-Loups (valley of the wolves), a forest that looks down on Sceaux chateau. It was in the midst of these trees that Chateaubriand wrote “Mémoires d’outre-tombe” (Memoirs from beyond the grave). Today, a renowned arboretum comprises 500 species of different trees and shrubs. The town is only 8 km from the Porte-d’Orléans. It is reached via the N118 which goes down to Sèvres bridge, on the Seine embankments, and via the N306 (to Porte-d’Orléans) as well as via the RER train line B which has fast links to Paris. In the neighbouring town of Sceaux are the Lakanal and Marie-Curie schools, both with good reputations. The private Sophie-Barat school is nearby in Chatenay-Malabry. The shops in the centre of Plessis-Robinson are but 5-minutes’ walk from the house and the town-centre of Sceaux, with its provincial air, is less than 10 minutes away.

Description

This house stands in the most verdant and protected sector of the department. Tranquillity is omnipresent. This contemporary residence dates from 2006. A real haven of peace set on the heights of Sceaux, it comprises eight rooms and five bedrooms, spanning 360 m² of living space spread over several half levels. A lush garden surrounds a heated, south-facing swimming pool. The views are unobstructed. Terraces make it possible to take meals outside and, upstairs, pleasantly extend the biggest bedrooms.

The house

This well-insulated, contemporary house is constructed over 6 half levels: entrance hall-kitchen-living room, guest floor, master level, children’s floor and garden level.
Resolutely modern and cubic in shape, it spans 360 m² of living space, with three leisure terraces and a covered car parking area. The main entrance is a vestibule which provides access to a little study, a storage area and a door leading to the closed parking area. On the upper half floor is a fitted, functional, elegant and spacious kitchen. On the lower half floor is a 43 m² bright living room, overlooked by the mezzanine of a library in the form of a honeycomb made of Corian. A contemporary fireplace and a wall lined with Italian walnut bestow the lounge and the dining room with a warm air. A wide French window in the lounge opens on to a south-facing terrace, protected by a remote-controlled, retractable awning.
The highest floor in the house is that comprising a vast bedroom, with parquet flooring, under the slopes of the roof. It has its own south-facing terrace, with a view over the garden.
On the floor below the lounge, the area is given over to the owners of the house. It includes an elegant suite, with a large, built-in dressing room and a view over the garden. The bedroom is spacious. The bathroom is fitted with an Italian style shower, a bath and twin wash-hand basins. The U-shaped dressing room is large, with multiple storage areas behind glazed doors.
Below the master suite are three bedrooms, each spanning approx. 15 m² with their own large dressing room. Facing the garden, they are filled with sunshine. A shower room with two Corian wash-hand basins and an Italian style shower complete this floor.
The garden level comprises a summer kitchen and an exercise room, facing the outside, in this case the swimming pool terrace and the garden. All these areas face south. The garden was designed by a landscape gardener. Verdant, it delimits the boundaries of the property with a variety of plants. The swimming pool is heated and fitted with an electric rolling safety cover. An exotic wood terrace flanks the pool.
Three cellars comprise a machine room, an area for laying down wine, a vast storage room and a closed garage. The house is fitted with many security features including alarms, armoured doors, centralised electric roller shutters and shatterproof glass in all the openings.

Ground floor
The ground floor comprises a large living room with a 5 m high ceiling over half of the lounge. This extremely bright area, facing south and west, is illuminated via spectacularly large picture windows, fitted with remote-controlled shutters. The floor is covered with oak wood parquet flooring. The walls of this level are lined with several built-in units such as bookshelves and cupboards.
Two areas given over to relaxation and a shower room take up the remainder of this very cosy level which could be transformed into two bedrooms or a large suite, with its own bathroom.

First floor
This level comprises a dining room and a kitchen. The latter is fitted with Comprex furniture, with top quality units, a Zimbabwean granite work surface and brushed aluminium walls. The spacious dining room features a wide picture window, opening on to a 20 m² terrace where it is possible to take meals whilst enjoying a panoramic view of the valley. A lounge, adjoining the dining room, looks down on to the floor below.
Second floor
The second floor is taken up by two bedrooms. The first is extremely bright and decorated in a very pleasant Japanese style. The second forms a large suite, enhanced with a magnificent bathroom featuring an Italian style shower and a bath. The bed faces a 50 m² terrace, with a breath-taking view making it the ideal place to take breakfast. There are many teak wood cupboards with first-class fixtures and fittings.

The basement is very large. It consists of an extremely spacious area which could be transformed into two bedrooms or one large bedroom and a study, together with a spacious bathroom. A door at the other end of the basement provides access to the garage which can take two cars and houses the boiler room. This level is quite secure.

Our opinion

This is a very well balanced home, ultra-modern without being in the least bit cold. A semi-circular arched door, an exposed quarry stone wall and the wood of certain floors contrast with its smooth, refined lines. Elegant railings delimit not only the outside terraces but also the indoor library. The rooms are laid out on levels that are not floors: everything has been designed to provide comfort and autonomy for its residents. Paris can be easily reached or forgotten by the side of the swimming pool, amidst the vegetation. Chateaubriand lived in the park near to the Vallée-aux-Loups but, here, it would only be possible to write memoirs of a happy life.
