Near to Fontainebleau, a chalet presented to the 1889 World’s Fair
in Paris by the French Eiffel Company
Fontainebleau, SEINE-ET-MARNE ile-de-france 77300 FR

In a village on the banks of the river Seine, in the midst of Fontainebleau Forest, former hunting grounds of the kings of France, known the world over courtesy of the numerous artists that it has inspired. The bustling royal town and its palace are but 10 minutes away.
It can be reached from Paris in an hour via the A6 motorway. A train station, just 5 minutes from the property, has 47-minute links to Paris-Gare-de-Lyon.

In a no-through road, in a setting where middle-class buildings rival one another in elegance, this large, rectangular building stands on a terrace looking down on to the river Seine.
A long fence, enhanced with an especially designed, tiled pavement, protects it from onlookers.
A wooden terrace, planted with roses and miscellaneous fragrant, flowering shrubs, is extended by a swimming pool.
Steps lead down to the bank.

The chalet

Its original architecture is the result of the reassembly of a smaller chalet that housed the pavilion of the New York insurance company during the 1889 World’s Fair, presented by the Eiffel Company at the same time as its famous tower, now a symbol of Paris.
Its facades, covered with polychrome bricks reflecting geometric Jacquard motifs, feature an exposed wooden structure, aligned with small balconies and coloured ceramic panels above the windows.
Inside, most of the walls are lined with pitch-pine panelling, the floors are covered with parquet flooring or coloured cement tiles. There are also marble or wooden fireplaces.
This building spans approx. 360 m² of living space over four levels.

River level
This level has direct access to the bank and comprises a boiler room, a cellar, an old kitchen and a dining room, one of the walls of which is fitted with floor-to-ceiling cupboards, the doors featuring an open motif in the shape of a three-leaf clover. It has also been used as a billiards’ room.
Ground floor
As on all the other floors, the walls are lined with pitch-pine panelling. The main entrance opens on to the stairwell, on one side of which is a television room and a dining room, enhanced with a marble fireplace and opening into a spacious lounge where an impressive Brunswick billiards’ table takes pride of place. It stands on coloured cement floor tiles, featuring plant motifs. This room also includes double doors opening out on to the terrace. On the other side, a kitchen is fitted with poplar wood cupboards, Burgundy stone worksurfaces and a Lacanche kitchen range. The eating area is laid out in a glazed section, resembling the prow of a boat. A toilet completes this level.
First floor
A long corridor on this level leads to a single bedroom, followed by two bedrooms with wash-hand basins, a toilet and a large, L-shaped bedroom, enhanced with a red marble fireplace. It is very bright courtesy of its windows and French windows which open on to balconies, providing wide views of the Seine and the forest. This floor also includes a dressing room and a bathroom with a shower.
Second floor
This level is taken up by a bedroom, with a shower room, a toilet, two small rooms or studies, a laundry room, a large terrace overlooking the street and a large bedroom, with a bathroom.

Our opinion

Bearing actual witness to the 1889 World’s Fair, like a cruise liner floating on water, this astonishing residence, built at the same time as its neighbours, the so-called “Follies on the banks of the Seine” (Les Affolantes des bords de Seine), features wide views over the river, the forest and the continuous ballet of the narrowboats from every window. Presented at the same time as the Eiffel Tower by the Eiffel Company because of its internal metal structure, Mr-Gustave-Eiffel answered critics of his works, saying “Can one think that because we are engineers, beauty does not preoccupy us or that we do not try to build beautiful, as well as solid and long lasting structures?” In any case, the proof is there, and everything is ready to accommodate a large family.
