Location

This old stone residence, just a few minutes from Briare SNCF train station and near to local shops, is in the centre of a village, with a large number of picturesque houses, alongside the river Loire. Furthermore, it is one of rare market town to be near the river. Three towers bear witness to a tumultuous past but its way of life nowadays is extremely peaceful.

Description

This house stands facing a large square, featuring a 17th century church, constructed by the “Confrérie Saint-Vincent”, a guild of vine-growers who pay tribute to Saint-Vincent, patron saint of vine-growers. The house was probably home to a vine-grower in the 19th century, just like most of the houses in the village.
Impressive, it is bordered by a lane that leads down to the river Loire. Wooden carriage gates open into a garden, largely taken up by a swimming pool. A small terrace is ideal for eating outside when the weather is warm. The church bell-tower appears to keep a discreet watch on the garden.

An impressive village house

The architecture of this house is marked by the attractive stone used for its varied, cheerful facade. Several basement windows can be seen on the basement level. The ground floor features two large, basket-handle arched, paned windows, fitted with solid wood shutters and framed with white stone and brick. The plain front door also has a wooden shutter. The colours are pale, like the pastel green of the carriage gates. The roof is covered with old tiles. The overhanging, tiled cornice provides a great deal of character. A little opening surrounded by orange bricks, on the left-hand side of the carriage gates, must have been used for taking delivery of the wine barrels which arrived by boat on the river Loire. In the garden, a fenced swimming pool faces the quarry stone block walls, sometimes adorned with half-timbering, mixing wood and brick. Tile fragments fill the gaps between the half-timbering.


Ground floor
The front door opens into a large room composed of a kitchen, open on to a dining room and a lounge. The small, ceramic floor tiles come direct from Italy and give the house a certain character. The ceiling features old, white-painted, exposed beams. In addition to all the windows around the room, the front door has a glazed fanlight which also lets in light. A fireplace, with an original curved shape, takes pride of place in the lounge. It has an open hearth, a white stone mantel and a brick floor. The lounge precedes a little, very cosy lounge marked by a mezzanine, with wrought iron railings. The nearby bedroom has its own fully tiled and fitted bathroom. It has the same Italian floor tiles as in the entrance room. The ceiling beams are light in colour. This authentic room, with its moulded cupboards and its two illuminating windows, is steeped in charm.
First floor
A straight flight of wooden stairs goes up to the first floor. A relatively wide, luminous corridor, with parquet flooring, provides access to the various bedrooms. They almost all have their own bathroom and toilet. A small opening in an alcove leads to the mezzanine, with its view looking down on to the little lounge.
Second floor
The attic has been laid out as a large bedroom where the exposed roofing framework exudes character. The floor is covered with oak wood parquet flooring. A bathroom has also been installed here.

Our opinion

Just a stone’s throw away, the river Loire provides an ever-changing view and long walks along its towpath. The bell-tower on the little village church keeps an eye on this immaculately kept house, exuding an immediately reassuring impression of tranquillity. The interior has been tastefully converted. The conviviality of the reception areas and the autonomy of the bedrooms fully justify a bed & breakfast activity as well as a permanent family residence or a holiday home for those moments of relaxation and fulfilment that these premises inspire.
