This property stands in a little town between the banks of the Seine and the edge of Fontainebleau forest. With 30-minute train links to Paris-Gare-de-Lyon, the town is near to the A6 and A5 motorways. The station and several local shops can be reached on foot. Fontainebleau is 10 minutes away by car and Melun is 20 minutes away.
This impressive building is one of those featured in the book “Les affolantes des bords de Seine” (follies on the banks of the Seine), the commissioners of which obviously belonged to the new 19th century bourgeoisie. Members of these middle-classes became more and more numerous courtesy of the rapid-development of the railway. They would spend the summer months in the country and winter in Paris. Many artists joined them, trying to find inspiration in the surroundings.
The greater part of this building reflects a neo-Norman style which is notably characterised by the heavily overhanging, ornate roofs and decorative half-timbering. Here, a square tower topped with a bell turret, houses an inside stairway. An impressive stone, dual flight stairway leads to a large terrace, under which there is a fountain. This terrace is a wonderful place for contemplating the meandering river and the passing narrowboats.
It spans approx. 600 m² of living space over four levels.
The caretaker’s cottage
Spanning a floor surface area of approx. 40 m², it comprises a living room, a kitchen area, two small bedrooms and a shower room with a toilet.
The swimming pool
This oval-shaped pool is installed behind the house and filled with water from a spring.
The tennis court
The court is very near to the house but is in need of renovation works.
This site is ideal. An impressive, riverside residence, it is a blend of neo-Norman, Anglo-Norman, seaside and regionalist styles. The grounds slope just enough for the vast terrace to be like a belvedere, from which to contemplate narrowboats passing slowly by, the nearby vegetation rustling in the wind and the peaceful countryside. The inside is sumptuous. The decorator who restored it employed skilled craftsmen. Should residents want a break from boat outings from the property’s private jetty, there are numerous walks around the nearby Fontainebleau forest.
