An elegant, 19th century residence and its parklands,
with a view of the Loire river, on the outskirts of Tours
Tours, INDRE-ET-LOIRE center-val-de-loire 37000 FR

On the outskirts of the historic town of Tours, with the banks of the river Loire just a few minutes’ walk away from the house. The town centre, the TGV train station, shops and cultural centres are all within walking distance. They can also be reached by tram or bus in 10 minutes. Paris is an hour away by train or 2½ hours away by motorway.

This property, in a little one-way street, is accessed via a wicket gate and wide, remote-controlled gates. The magnificent, fully walled parklands are planted with a central cedar tree, over a hundred years old, as well as numerous other species. A maze of alleyways leads to a gazebo, built at the same time as the house. This tall residence dominates its parklands from beneath its multiple, steep, slate roofs. Its elegant facade is constructed from white freestone. The outbuildings include a little house at the foot of the old water tower.

The 19th century residence

This residence, with its white freestone and slate, clearly states its affinity to this region. Its main, south-facing facade has numerous openings letting in copious amounts of light. Each side has an entrance with a porch. All the window surrounds are topped with a central, projecting or ornate keystone. Real windows topped with slate gables protrude from the roofs, covered with the same material. The 350 m² of living space are spread out over the four levels, constructed above the basement. The major part of the building still has its original decorative features such as panelling, moulding, parquet flooring, fireplaces and stained glass windows.

Ground floor
The main entrance to this residence is via the porch on the east side. The entrance hall, with its marble floor tiles featuring inlaid decoration, provides access, right, to the stairway tower and a cloakroom, with a toilet as well as a wash-hand basin. A study, on the left-hand side, has a fireplace and its own porch leading out into the garden. Straight on, but in the right-hand section, is a kitchen, with a door leading outside, as well as a stairway going down to the basement. Also straight on, but in the left-hand section, are two adjoining reception rooms with parquet flooring. These comprise a lounge, in the three sided, south-facing tower, which features magnificent original panelling and a fireplace with a trumeau, and, adjoining via double doors on either side of the fireplace, a dining room which has stained glass windows, direct access to the parklands and a fireplace.
First floor
There is parquet flooring throughout this level. The landing, illuminated via a stained glass window, provides access on the south side to a bedroom, with a fireplace, a second large bedroom, with a fireplace and a bow window overlooking the parklands, and a third large bedroom, with a fireplace, windows and a dressing room.
On the north side is a little room which can be used as a study or a dressing room, a bathroom and a toilet.

Second floor
This level, also with parquet flooring throughout, has a south-facing bedroom, with a fireplace, a second large bedroom overlooking the parklands, with a fireplace, a small bedroom or study, as well as a bathroom and a toilet.
Third floor
Previously used for staff purposes, this level has parquet flooring throughout and is connected to the central heating system. Just like the second floor, it has three rooms, one of which features the superb roofing framework of the three-sided tower. It also has a little shower room.
The basement, with its cement floor tiles, is extremely practical courtesy of its ceiling height and its various accesses from the inside and the outside of the residence. It comprises a summer kitchen, a dining room with an atrium, a linen room, two storerooms, a boiler room and a cellar reached via a few steps.

The outbuildings

A single-car garage can be reached via the remote-controlled gates and a second vehicle can be parked below an adjoining canopy.
A little house in the parklands is ideal for use as a garden tool shed. It comprises a toilet, a small storage room and the old water tower.

The parklands

These fully walled parklands span a surface area of 4,220 m. Forming a countrified setting in the town centre, they are nuisance-free and totally unoverlooked. A majestic cedar tree stands in the middle, facing the residence. Heavily wooded, these parklands are crisscrossed with alleyways, leading to a gazebo set in the undergrowth.

Our opinion

The seaside or spa resort style of this residence is not at all out of place so near to the river Loire. All the neighbouring houses along the street, sloping steeply down to the river, are interesting. But they are all dominated by this residence, its verticality clearly marked by its stairway tower, topped with a candlesnuffer roof, and its bow window, spanning three levels under its own polygonal roof. In short, the facades are filled with beautiful features. The inside abounds with wonderful decors including rocaille-style panelling in the lounge, stained glass windows featuring characters or geometric shapes, coffered ceilings and several types of cement tiles to name but a few. Furthermore, residents looking southwards have a superb view of Tours cathedral.
