Nantes, the sixth largest town in France as regards the number of inhabitants, attracts new citizens every year. The town’s appeal is no doubt due to its geographical location, 45 minutes from the sea and 2 hours from Paris, its economic dynamism as well as its good schools.
This property, very near to the town centre, stands in a district with a wealth of good, local shops. Its pleasant way of life is enhanced by the presence of the river Erdre. Public transportation is to be found at the end of the street. Talensac market is but a 20-minute walk.


This house can be glimpsed above high walls. The entrance to this property, spanning a surface area of almost 1,500 m², is in a no-through road. The entrance gates open on to a driveway, running alongside a carport and a garden, which goes up towards the house, prior to going around the latter and reaching a terrace as well as a second garden on a lower level. The view from here extends over a meander of the river Erdre and its bridges. A wicket gate provides access to a little flight of steps leading directly to the promenade along the banks of the Erdre.
The building, spanning a floor surface area of approx. 300 m², adjoins another building on one side, vestige of a once bigger property. The layout gives pride of place to space and the size of the rooms, rather than their number. Reception rooms, a kitchen and a cloakroom take up the ground floor. Three bedrooms and two bathrooms share the first floor. The top floor is divided between an artist’s studio, a study and a shower room. All of the rooms look out over the river and the windows are fitted with indoor shutters.

The house

This rectangular house spans three levels. Its gable roof is covered with slate and features curved pediment roof dormers. Ten openings are set out on the first two levels of the each of the facades. The south-east facade comprises a central projection, housing the entrance door. Three sets of railings composed of pear-shaped balusters embellish the first floor.
Ceilings are approx. four metres high in the reception rooms, whilst those in the bedrooms are three metres high.
Light is omnipresent courtesy of the numerous openings and copious amounts of sunlight flood in throughout the day courtesy of the building’s aspect which provides some cool refuges.

Ground floor
The entrance door opens into a vestibule paved with octagonal flagstones, inlaid with decorative cement tiles. This area, housing a stone stairway, provides access to a lounge, a dining room, a kitchen and a cloakroom with a toilet. Terracotta tiles cover the floors in the dining room and kitchen, whilst the lounge has herringbone pattern, oak wood parquet flooring. This large reception room is illuminated via five openings, including two French windows leading out all on a level on to a terrace. It is decorated with panelling as well as moulding and enhanced with a grey marble fireplace.
First floor
The landing is illuminated via a French window opening on to a balcony, included in the central projection. It leads to a bedroom, spanning almost 30 m², with an adjoining bathroom, toilet and dressing room. Opposite, a corridor leads to two smaller bedrooms and a bathroom with a toilet. The floors are covered with strip pattern parquet flooring.
Second floor
This top floor comprises but two large rooms, one of which is used as a study and the other as a studio for a painter-sculptor. A little shower room can be reached via the studio. Light wells and roof dormers let copious amounts of light into these rooms. The exposed roofing framework and the pinewood, strip pattern parquet floors bestow them with an undeniable charm.

Our opinion

An illustrious family of local doctors lived on these premises. It would, no doubt, be presumptuous to think that the setting played a part in the development of this family’s intellect. But the tranquillity as well as the calming atmosphere inspired by the view of this magnificent river can but give rise to feelings of well-being as well as to creativity as is proved by the works of the current owner. The house is bright, the rooms comfortable and spacious, the view of the water omnipresent, the gardens welcoming and sunny. All of which makes this rare property a retreat in the town centre.
