Tarascon is on the side of the river Rhône, 23 km from Avignon (TGV train station), 27 km from Nîmes and 17 km from Arles. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the Alpilles and Lubéron mountains, Aix-en-Provence, Marseille and Montpellier are not far away. The small town, made famous by Alphonse-Daudet, still has all of its old character. In the centre of a tourist area, with a wealth of historic sites and monuments, in the south-east of France, it has all shops and amenities.


This mansion house stands in the old medieval town, just a stone’s throw from King René’s castle which looks down on to the Rhône. Together with other old houses, it is on a wide paved street. It dates from the 15th century and still has several age-old features. The majority of the current house dates from the 18th century, as can be seen from the street and courtyard facades, and a few interior, 19th century features have been added. It spans a total floor surface area of 500 m². The main, ochre-coloured facade, facing the street, spans 4 levels. The old carriage gates are on the left-hand side.
There is another entrance in a neighbouring street. An inner courtyard, laid out as a patio, is the focal point of life in this house and has a theatrical air with semi-circular openings, enhanced with plants, on the ground floor.

The various levels

The various levels, laid out around the patio, are reached via two stairways.

Ground floor
Double doors, on the street side, open into a wide, vaulted, 36 m² passageway, laid out as a vestibule, leading to the courtyard. The main stairway is on the right-hand side of this passageway. Once used for utility and storage purposes, the ground floor rooms have been converted into a dining room, with a fireplace, a small kitchen, a linen room, a boiler room and storerooms. One 18 m² room and another spanning 20 m² await conversion.
A second stone stairway could make a section of the house independent, especially as a second entrance hall opens on to another street. The ground floor spans a total floor surface area of 152 m², not counting the patio.

First floor
The first floor comprises a large living room laid out above the vestibule, looking out over the street and the courtyard. It also has a kitchen, 3 bedrooms, a small lounge opening on to a terrace, 2 shower rooms and a bathroom.
Second floor
This level includes a second large living room, three bedrooms and their shower room, a room spanning approx. 20 m² and another spanning 12 m² which are currently used as storage areas but could be used for other purposes.
Third floor
An independent flat on the top floor comprises a living room with an integrated kitchen, a bedroom and its bathroom as well as a very large terrace.

Our opinion

An ogee arch, a mullioned window and yet more decorative features are still in existence, bearing witness to the age of this residence. The 18th century then left its mark above each window in the form of a keystone. The ochre colour of the street facade and the sienna brown of the patio add a Mediterranean warmth to the stately architecture. Tarascon’s central position in Provence can justify living all year round in this mansion house which could equally well accommodate paying guests, especially as it could easily be divided up. In either case, its meticulously carried out restoration works will be much appreciated.
