An authentic, traditional Bastide house
to the south of Grasse and 20 minutes from Nice
, ALPES-MARITIMES provence-cote-dazur FR

To the south of Grasse, at the foot of the hills on which the town stands, extends a flat, verdant area, safe from the excesses of urbanisation. Numerous perfumers decided to construct their residences here, especially as the seaside towns are within easy reach and the centre of Grasse is not far away. The district of Saint-Mathieu is a haven of peace.

This long residence, composed of two adjoining buildings, nestles in the midst of vast, wooded parklands, filled with flowers and surrounded by wooded hills and valleys. This authentic, traditional Bastide house was constructed in the 18th century by a perfumer. Already one of the biggest in the area at that time, it has since been extended in keeping with good trade practices and, despite its two upper levels, now resembles more a traditional long farmhouse.
An immense terrace laid out at its base provides an outdoor living space with a gently murmuring, round stone fountain. At the end, a covered area is idea for eating outside. The summer kitchen is very well equipped.
Views taking in the surrounding hills are to found in the parklands, planted with miscellaneous fruit and olive trees. They also include a large, tiled swimming pool and a caretaker’s cottage.
A large carpark can take twenty or so cars.

The building

This residence has stone walls which are up to a metre thick in places. Its three levels are connected by a central stairway and a lift. The thickness of its walls bestows the building with thermal comfort that is very efficient and economical.
The ceilings feature thick, long, oak wood beams, extending across the rooms and giving an impression of both robustness and serenity. The windows, filtering the light, project the pattern of their small panes on to the solid wood parquet flooring.

Ground floor
A solid wood, arched entrance door opens into a vestibule, with exposed stone walls. It provides access, left, to a large kitchen and a study. A central stairway stands at the end. On the right-hand side is a dining room, followed by a vast living room. A corridor, crossing the entire building, leads to the lift and miscellaneous little storage rooms. The rooms are all spacious and have been renovated using quality materials.
First floor
This level can be reached via the stairway or the lift. A corridor provides access to four comfortable bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. All different but all bright and featuring wooden parquet flooring as well as exposed beams and stone, these rooms are but an invitation to relax.
Second floor
In the oldest section, under the roofing framework, light floods in through square windows on a level with the floor. The ceilings are higher in the straight section. This level comprises a total of three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom.
A small independent pavilion is ideal for accommodating one or two caretakers. The space could equally be used as bedrooms.
The parklands
These fully enclosed, sheltered parklands extend over more than a hectare. Encircled by cypress trees that reflect the wooded landscapes of the surrounding hillsides, these parklands comprise large areas, laid to lawn and planted with flowers as well as fruit and olive trees. They also include a French bowls pitch and a hut used for storage purposes.
The swiming pool
This 7x14 m, tiled swimming pool is surrounded by a flat stone terrace and a little wooden pool-house.

Our opinion

This proud-looking building looks out from all its windows at a Mediterranean landscape, just the sight of which creates a feeling of well-being. It gives the impressive of being alone in the world and yet Grasse, Mougins and Cannes are all close by. New owners would therefore be able to take good advantage of the bright, sparkling interiors, if they decided not to keep them to themselves. The knowledge that they are staying in the former home of a perfumer will make guests even more appreciative of the fragrances of the south of France, of which the parklands are but a sample.
