Location

The market town is in the French department of Loiret, 120 km from Paris, 110 km of which is via the A6/A77 motorways or the N7. The train station, with links to Paris, is 10 km away. Vimory aerodrome is 5 km away. Orléans is 60 km away. The biggest French national forest, spanning 35,000 ha, is just a stone’s throw away. Amongst the region’s architectural heritage gems, the 78 km long Orléans Canal crosses the small town with its 1,400 inhabitants. The waterway was constructed in the late 17th century to carry merchandise and firewood to Paris. It has therefore linked the Loire Basin to that of the Seine for more than 200 years.

Description

This property, spanning a continuous surface area of one hectare, is surrounded by hedges in the centre of the market town. On the south side, a road leads to the village whilst a wood, on the north side, is bordered by the Orléans Canal. This residence stands in the centre of protective, verdant parklands. It is reached via large wooden gates. On each side are two large outbuildings. Flower beds, narrow pathways, flower-filled parterres, an orchard and undergrowth provide different views and coloured compartments which are both wild and yet controlled at the same time. Wisteria, roses and Virginia Creeper climb the facades, whilst boxwood hedges delimit the areas planted with various species such as elm, oak, acacia, bamboo, cypress, willow and contorted willow, magnolia as well as bignonia, lilac and hydrangea, apple, pear, cherry and quince. The well is used for watering purposes.

The large, luxurious home

This residence is a perfect example of 19th century architecture which worshipped symmetry. But functionality takes precedence over ornamentation. This classical style residence spans a total floor surface area of 412 m² and has ceilings between 3 and 3.42 m high. Its three levels are partially constructed over a vaulted cellar. The stone facades are covered in a sandy-coloured rendering. The central building, five bays wide, is flanked by two pavilions. Dressed stone frames the numerous openings and forms the cornices. The wooden-framed windows, with wrought iron railings, can be closed using slatted wooden shutters. The entrance doors have doorsteps. The hip and gable roofs, covered with slate, feature several hinged skylights and Jacobin-style roof dormers.


Ground floor
The ground floor spans approx. 174 m². A vast entrance hall provides access to both sides of the house. The floor is covered with stone tiles, inlaid with small black tiles. The walls feature wainscoting and panelling. The ceiling, above a cornice, is adorned with a decorative stucco rose. The winding, wooden stairway has wrought iron railings with a wooden handrail. The right-hand wing comprises two communicating rooms, a lounge and a music room, as well as a study, all decorated with fireplaces featuring stone mantels. The floors are covered with old terracotta tiles and strip pattern parquet flooring. A corridor, leading to a laundry room and a toilet, provides access to the left-hand wing and its dining room, enhanced with strip pattern parquet flooring and wainscoting as well as a ceiling cornice and rose. A ceramic wood-burning stove is installed in a recess. The kitchen is fitted with built-in units made of wood and brick; the area around the kitchen range is decorated with blue and white ceramic tiles. The kitchen also includes a large, open-hearth fireplace and wooden cupboards. The floor is covered with cement and old terracotta tiles laid in a chessboard pattern whilst the walls are painted. Two large glazed doors and a window let in copious amounts of light and provide access to the garden and a vaulted cellar.
First floor
This level, with 3 m high ceilings, spans a floor surface area of approx. 130 m². A long corridor provides access to the rooms including five bedrooms, one of which has a bathroom with toilet, and another has a shower room and toilet. The corridor also leads to a shower room and a separate toilet. A back stairway goes up from this level to the attic space. All the bedrooms intercommunicate with one another. Some of them are enhanced with a stone fireplace. The floors are covered with old terracotta tiles or strip pattern parquet flooring and the walls are painted light colours. All the windows, whether north or south facing, look out over the parklands.
Attic
The attic space spans a total floor surface area of approx. 108 m². One section, spanning 65 m², has been converted into three bedrooms and a shower room with an Italian-style shower and a toilet. The second section is an attic. All the floors are covered with old terracotta tiles and the beams have been left exposed.
Cellar
The cellar, spanning a floor surface area of approx. 30 m², is divided into a wine cellar and a machine room.

The outbuildings

These are a traditional, long, rectangular farmhouse which has been restored and divided into two sections. The total floor surface area is approx. 110 m². The guest house, spanning 76 m², comprises a study, a kitchen, two bedrooms as well as a shower room and toilet. It is followed by a woodshed and a small storage room. The beams have been left exposed. The floors are all covered with old terracotta tiles. Each room has a fireplace and a cast iron radiator. The outside walls are rendered. The framing around the openings is composed of brick. The gable roof, covered with flat tiles, features roof dormers.

The old stables

This rectangular building spans a floor surface area of approx. 198 m² over two levels. Constructed from stone, it has a gable roof covered with flat tiles. It features a gable roof dormer and several skylights. All the windows have brick framing and look out sideways over the central garden.


Ground floor
The first level comprises a small entrance hall with a toilet, a garage, a tack room, two horse loose boxes and a machine room.
First floor
The upstairs, spanning a floor surface area of approx. 100 m², comprises a large bedroom, with a shower room and toilet, as well as a vast lounge. A fireplace and cast iron radiators heat the area under the exposed beams. The floor is covered with old, venetian red terracotta tiles.

Our opinion

Provided that its constitutive ingredients, such as symmetry, pediments, panelling, cornices and moulding, are respected, a certain classicism is the basis of liberty. It authorises all daring as here, for instance, where colours and contemporary furniture are quite at home together. The outbuildings, in a more regionalist style that includes brick profile and contours, in no way detract from the beauty of the residence. New owners will feel at ease, both here and in the parklands, which are like a sample of this airy, wooded region, with its temperate climate, within easy reach of the French capital.
