This residence, in the golden triangle of horse stud farms, surrounded by fields and grasslands, is 190 km from Paris which can be reached by road in 2½ hours or by rail in less than 2 hours. Caen, and its airport with flights to London and the south of France, is 60 km away. The nearest town, with a train station, large shops and all useful amenities, is 4 km away.
This residence comprises a central house and a pavilion, with the same sized openings. The hip roofs are covered with slate; the pavilion roof is slightly higher. The entrance door, in the middle of the house, is topped on the roof level with a triangular pediment. The roofs feature roof dormers and skylights. The facade facing the parklands has more or less the same layout. The house’s entrance door is set in a projecting, enclosed porch, featuring two side windows, whilst the pavilion protrudes slightly. Tasteful, simple renovation works have been carried out on the property, keeping everything beautifully authentic.
The old bakery
This old bakery was in existence during the One Hundred Years War! Now a guest house, spanning a floor surface area of approx. 40 m², it features a pyramid, slate roof. The kitchen is housed in a little extension. It has exposed stone walls. The oven fireplace has been preserved in the living room, with its old hexagonal, terracotta floor tiles and its windows overlooking a small, private stone terrace. A bedroom and a shower room are laid out on a mezzanine and the roofing framework as well as the character features of this 15th century construction have been preserved.
The press-house and the workshop
The first building, spanning a floor surface area of approx. 95 m² over two levels, is constructed from red brick. Its roof is covered with tiles. It is bordered by an impressive covered area, the roof of which is also two stories high. The openings are arched. Two doors provide access to a room containing a wheel and its grindstone, as well as a press without guard. It is adjoined by a second room, now laid out as a cellar. They precede carriage doors that open into a storage space, where horse-drawn carriages were once kept. The upstairs can be reached via an outside ladder.
Following on from the first construction, and set slightly back, the second outbuilding is built of quarry stone blocks and its openings have red brick framing. Sliding carriage doors open into a room, used for storage and workshop purposes, in which a stairway goes upstairs, to a floor surface area spanning approx. 45 m² which could be converted. Next, the boiler room can be reached from the outside.
Constructed from red brick, the stables open on to the parklands and comprise three horse loose boxes.
The orchard, enclosed by walls on three sides, opens on to the entrance courtyard for the residence, separated from the latter by the guest house and a hedge. The walls are notably covered with fan-trained fruit trees. A greenhouse adjoins a south-facing wall.
Surrounded by thick hedges and miscellaneous species of trees, the parklands are predominantly wooded, notably with a one-hundred-year-old purple beech, common beech, ash, chestnut and weeping willow trees. Designed by the first English owner, they are laid out in sections: trees with coloured foliage or twisted trunks, grassland, lawns and the river. Enclosures that enclose nothing!
Going towards the river, visitors are surprised to discover a canal running parallel to it, with vestiges of its stone walls and walkway, laid out under the canopy formed by the foliage of its bordering trees. A lake, between and connecting the two water courses, separates two small meadows that resemble islets.
This residence, featuring vertical pilasters and horizontal string courses, could have been overly sober as required by early 19th century architectural codes. But this is not the case on account of its adjoining, spacious pavilion which creates characterising asymmetry. It is large and should, therefore, be accompanied by outbuildings: they are there in the form of an old bakery as well as a covered area and have their own architectural interest. Its parklands are steeped in tranquillity. This property even includes the peaceful waters of a bordering river and little canal. Premises such as these do not appear to have betrayed their initial mission, that of providing their residents with a pleasant place to live.
