Location

This property, in the French department of Yvelines, is to the south of the French Vexin Regional Nature Park, 6 km from Mantes-La-Jolie, 60 km from Paris and 150 km from Deauville via the A13, also known as “Normandy’s motorway”. It stands in verdant surroundings with a wealth of heritage, ideal for taking walks through the forest or along the banks of the river Seine.

Description

This village house, laid out in a U-shape with a gable facing the street, is constructed from stone, covered with rendering, the hue of which is reminiscent of stone. In actual fact, it is two old houses that have been joined together via a room with a terrace roof and an extremely luminous atrium window. Inside is a paved courtyard and behind the house a long, walled garden.
The interior courtyard establishes a link between the eras, making up its history through a variety of materials such as paving stones, glass, metal, slender bamboo and flamboyant hydrangeas. There is a fine synthesis, or symbiosis, which is perfectly successful. These refined premises contrast with the rustic simplicity of the garden. The setting is such that residents can easily say “courtyard side” or “garden side”.

The house

This village house, spanning two levels, is constructed from quarry stone blocks and covered with a stone-coloured rendering, characteristic of the local architecture. Formerly two buildings, it is now reunited under a single atrium.
The different roofs are covered with interlocking tiles, apart from the extension which is covered with a fully-tiled roof terrace.


Ground floor
An entrance hall provides access to a vast living room, illuminated by a floor-to-ceiling atrium, opening on to a patio. This living room has been renovated in a refined style just like that of the stairway with its open steps made of white concrete to resemble stone, integrated in the facade wall.
A corridor, on the right-hand side, leads to a fully fitted kitchen, adjoining a storeroom.
A completely vaulted bedroom, with a shower room, is at the end of the living room and opens on to the garden.
It precedes an artist’s studio that opens on to a veranda, plunging into the garden. This through room features picture windows and a concrete floor.
The entire ground floor opens on to the interior patio.

First floor
Above the artist’s studio, a vast room, with a cathedral ceiling, is illuminated via numerous skylights. This room features an exposed roofing framework and a room on a mezzanine that looks down into it. The height of the ceiling and its lighting make this room ideal for use as a studio or a workshop. A terrace roof links the first floor of the two buildings but, even so, each has its own stairway.
A corridor, looking down on the kitchen and a section of the living room, provides access to three bedrooms and a bathroom. The bedrooms all have parquet flooring and a window facing west on the village side.
The stairway continues up to an attic room used for storage purposes.

The garden
The garden can also be reached via another street other than that with the main entrance. It is at the back. Enclosed by walls, it has a path leading to the house. This path is bordered by various species of perennial plants and shrubs. Flowers and fruit succeed one another all through the seasons. The current residents having a great liking for all kinds of bamboo, the garden is planted with various species, some of which are rare even unknown.
In addition to the garden, all the ground floor rooms open on to a 50 m², fully paved patio. Facing south, it constitutes a suntrap terrace which notably features climbing roses and bamboo amongst other plants as well as shade for its residents’ comfort.

Garage
A double garage, reached via the second street, has a remote-controlled door.

Our opinion

Its position in a village is a real asset for anyone not seeking isolation. It is, nevertheless, perfectly possible to be isolated in the undreamt of comfort of an inner courtyard, which also acts as a light well, and its buildings. These appealing premises are steeped in serenity. This village house, with its spacious and somewhat unconventional rooms, is in an unspoilt setting.
