On the edge of Paris’ 13th arrondissement, Ivry-sur-Seine proudly displays its industrial, working-class past. The town is set out around old factories and plants. Now converted, most of them have become theatres, exhibition halls and concert halls. It is one of these, La-Manufacture-des-Oeillets, that houses this open-plan flat. The complex which was once a metal part factory producing metal eyelets and quill holders, was transformed in the 1980’s into a contemporary art centre, a school for graphic design and housing, where painters, sculptors, actors and students are to be found. This unusual complex is right in the middle of Ivry, near to shops and several schools as well as Ivry-sur-Seine’s National Theatre and its extensive programme. Marie-d'Ivry underground station (line 7) is a 6-minute walk away and an RER train station is 8 minutes away. Porte-d'Ivry is but 10 minutes away by car.
Description
This open-plan flat is part of La-Manufacture-des-Oeillets, which is on the French Historic Monument List. Here, wide industrial buildings are surrounded by gardens and large paved alleyways. This 2-storey, open-plan flat, at one end of the site, almost resembles a house. Fruit trees and vegetable gardens are laid out in front of its wide, south-facing, picture windows. Cars can be parked a little further away in an enclosed carpark. Inside the house, the ground floor comprises a large reception area, with an open-plan kitchen and dining room. It also includes a laundry room, a boiler room and a bathroom. The first floor is taken up by three bedrooms, a second bathroom, with a bath and sauna, as well as a little study and workshop under an atrium roof. A stairway goes up to the attic space.
The open-plan flat
The house is laid out over two levels. The facade was recently rendered and the roof, composed of inter-locking tiles, is in a good state of repair. The co-owned building management committee is not planning any works in the immediate future.
Ground floor
This house is accessed directly from the paved, flower-filled terrace via a wide picture window. The lounge reveals its generous dimensions (15x6 metres) and extends into a dining room and an open-plan kitchen. This vast reception area is notably enhanced with a brick wall and terracotta-coloured floor tiles, reinforcing the industrial air of the premises. The spacious kitchen is fitted with a large, sand-blasted concrete work surface which takes the shape of a bar. A door near to the kitchen gives access to laundry and boiler rooms. The last room on the ground floor is a bathroom, with a shower, an old wash-hand basin and stone floor tiles. An impressive wooden stairway in the lounge, adorned with two bookshelf units, leads to the upper levels. It reveals the top floor ceiling, 8 metres higher up.
First floor
All the bedrooms are on the first floor. The first stands out courtesy of its brick wall, its oak wood parquet flooring, its large skylight and its wardrobe, closed by old doors and flanked by a bookshelf unit. The room adjoins a wide bathroom, fitted with a bath and a sauna. A little door leads from there to a workshop under an atrium roof which could also become a bedroom. Further on, two bedrooms with mezzanines feature skylights, letting in copious amounts of light. Facing the bathroom is a little study, with exposed beams and a metal framework. This room also houses a stairway going up to the attic space. The latter, measuring 5x2 metres, is laid out as a second study, illuminated via two windows.
Our opinion
Brick walls, semi-open areas and atrium roofs, the industrial past of the premises is steeped in the walls of this open-plan flat. The site has great character and is proud of it. Bright, peaceful and vast areas in a natural setting, something that is now rare in this part of the Parisian region, will appeal equally well to families and artists as will the surrounding neighbourhood, where stage directors, graphic designers and dancers, as well as parents and children, come and go in search of new inspiration and a new experience. The “Théâtre des Quartiers d'Ivry” which is also housed here offers lessons in acting and improvisation, whilst the Crédac (Centre d’Art Contemporain d’Ivry, Ivry’s Contemporary Art Centre) transforms performances into exhibitions.
