What could be more a delightfully nostalgic setting for a few peaceful days than a former school? In Italy, and on this plateau of Veneta Vicentina foothills in particular, traces of the past are above all a way of enhancing the present - the Scuola is an enchanting illustration of this. Perched on a terrace above an immense plain where the contours of Venice can be made out in the distance, it joyfully exhibits exhibits a variety of colours and a sense of joie de vivre. The windows stay open in the summer whilst the sun shines on the stone and ripens the fruit. It is equally charming in winter when the surrounding mountains are covered in snow. If all roads lead to Rome, that of the schoolchildren passes by Lusiana where one will no doubt want to linger.
After working as a graphic designer in a marketing and design agency in the hotel industry, I wanted to experience the other, more practical side of what I had learned. We therefore looked for an original place with a good location and touristic potential. We chose the centre of the Veneto region, a strategic point for visiting important cities and taking in part in outdoor activities - we are on the Plateau of Asiago located one thousand metres above sea level in the province of Vicenza in Veneto.
La Scuola is a former school that dates back to the early 20th century. It still has the beautiful, original roof, wooden floors, doors, large windows, beautiful tiling typical of schools, many original details, charming spaces in the old attic and a beautiful playground. The four guest rooms were once classrooms, they are each associated with a school subject: geography, history, literature, arithmetic and science. The fifth, Maestra (teacher), is a comfortable loft in which the teacher spent the night as they could not go home.
The school was open until the 1960s before it was sold to villagers who rented it for housing. We bought it in 2013. After a passionate restoration, we turned it into a guest house with all its charm and structures still intact.
All the charm of a place full of history and the sweet memories of school days. Each room is decorated with furniture and details that are reminiscent of schools from the forties and fifties. The pieces were bought from flea markets, private collectors or even donated by former students who were proud to be able to revive "their" school in joy and glory! In the 'Alphabet' room, a large painting decorated with typographic letters can be found alongside old wooden tables, retro cupboards and contemporary industrial design objects. We offer a homemade breakfast prepared with fresh, local products, as well as a small guide of restaurants in the area ranging from bistros to Michelin-starred restaurants.
There is a wonderful private park in the village where you can walk and admire sculptures by local artists. At the Malga Serona farm, the Nicoli family welcome you into a simple and friendly atmosphere where they will show you how the famous Asiago cheese is produced and how they milk the cows. Meat of exceptional quality can be found at Macelleria Ronzani. At the Grappa Poli factory, you can learn about the method used to produce brandy. Finally, tours of the Firmino Monti wine cellars are available and are led by a passionate winemaker.

The building has a lovely outdoor courtyard with views of the plain and the small bell tower of the church. The common room is on the ground floor and is equipped with a wooden stove for relaxation, reading and breakfasts in winter. During the summer season, breakfast is served in the courtyard on colourful bistro tables. Also on the ground floor (accessible by an independent glass door) is the 'science' room, it is accessible to people with reduced mobility and equipped with three single beds. The first floor consists of the double 'History' and 'Literature' rooms; the 'Arithmetic' room on the same floor is reached by a separate staircase and can accommodate four people (two adults and two children). It is equipped with a double bed, a bunk bed and a games area. The 'Geography' room and the 'Teacher' room are in the attic. All rooms are equipped with a private "retro" bathroom with a large walk-in shower, the 'Teacher' room has a Belle Epoque bath. Pets are allowed in the 'Science' room on the ground floor, and only if requested.
