Property owners’ take the floor
Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?
I was looking for a lively, bright and authentic part of the countryside to set up a guest house, a country house I could share. I fell in love with the Périgord Noir, the light, the architecture, its remarkable history, exceptional heritage and way of life. As I crossed the porch of this old farm, I immediately knew that I wanted to dedicate myself to renovating and remaking this place full of history in order to share it. It was a real case of love at first sight with Bel Estiu, the sort that gives you shivers and puts a smile on your face every morning. It is a place to live; a peaceful, comfortable place with a soul; a place that makes you want to take your time, go back to basics and enjoy life's simple pleasures.
What can you offer people staying with you ?
Bel Estiu is more than a guest house, it is an independent country house reserved only for guests. It is a simple and friendly place for relaxing in the countryside and enjoying very comfortable bedrooms (with quality bedding and linen sheets) bright rooms, and tasty breakfasts prepared every morning with the best local products. The house has plenty of nooks where guests can meet and share or find some peace and quiet. The heated swimming lane, a little way from the house, overlooks the fields and is best enjoyed during hottest hours of the day or at dusk. Lunches and dinners can also be prepared in our kitchen for guests to make the most of all that we offer. For those looking for total relaxation on their trip, we provide a selection of local products, organic preserves, wines, craft beers and fruit juices for them to effortlessly feast on. Although my presence is discrete, I am always available to advise travelers, share the soul of this special place with them and make them feel at home.
What specific architectural features does your building have ?
At the heart of a hamlet, the house is installed in the former barn of a farm from the 18th century. It was built in ochre coloured stones and topped with lauzes-covered roofs that are typical of the Périgord Noir region. The authentic features of the farm - barns, dwelling house, courtyard, bread oven, outbuildings - still carry the charm of yesteryear and are arranged around a closed courtyard with a hundred-year-old lime tree. Sheltered in the middle of the fields, just in front of the pine forest, is a swimming lane in perfect harmony with the countryside, and the former henhouse where one can now laze in a hammock.
Places you would personally recommend
The Dordogne is full of cultural activities and places whose names alone evoke memories, stories and landscapes. With the likes of Sarlat, Lascaux, the Dordogne valley and its medieval fortresses, the listed village of La Roque-Gageac, Rocamadour and Padirac, the Périgord Noir is a beautiful, sunny region where life is good - Bel Estiu is the perfect place to explore it from. The best and most unique way to experience nature is to rent a canoe in La Roque-Gageac, a cliffside village ranked among the most beautiful villages in France, and down the Dordogne valley. When you return, you can sit down at La Belle Etoile where chef Régis Ongaro prepares local dishes with a very personal touch. Ask for a table on the terrace to enjoy the sunset over the Dordogne. If you want a more convivial and festive atmosphere, the night market of Saint-Amand-de-Coly is not to be missed. After visiting the impressive 12th century abbey, take a seat at one of the restaurants in the middle of the village and taste the cheeses from Ferme La Brunie or the delicious ice creams of Roland Manouvrier.
What is its history ?
Before becoming Bel Estiu, this farm served as a carpenter's workshop for a few years. The oldest documents date back to 1907 and trace the history of a family farm. One of the courtyard barns (the oldest building on the farm) has all the features of a tithe barn, including a mullioned window. It is steeped in history, a history that can be felt as soon as you walk through the door. After several months of work, the main barn became an independent guest house that welcomes friends, couples and families in 2016. The renovation, which was carried out by local craftsmen, was guided by my desire to preserve the authentic elements of the barn. Exposed beams, an old manger, terracotta tiles and the solid wood flooring have been blended with an authentic and personal decor. Antique pieces were collected over several years to create a place that is both unique and comfortable where guests can spend time, stroll, relax, share experiences and simple moments of happiness.
A guest house and B & B rolled into one - any stay at Bel Estiu is tailored to the guests' desires. Tucked away in a small countryside hamlet, it is a haven from which they can explore the Périgord Noir region. With leafy oak woods lining fields of cereals, the vegetation of the sunny Périgord Noir decorates the view from this holiday resort. Every detail has been chosen and arranged in the spirit of a family home to bring life and light back to the original materials.
